LO 5.1 Missing top menu

I just downloaded and "installed" the new LibreOffice 5.1 portable to a Win7 64-bit machine.

I am encountering odd behavior and want to know if I am the only one so far.

In Writer, there is no top menu (File, Format, View, etc) visible, although I can get the drop-down menus to appear after 1-2 seconds hovering the mouse over the menu options. The menus themselves are erratic and flicker when traversing with the mouse.

In Calc, the top menu is displayed, but there are no toolbars displayed, even when toggling them on and off in the View > Toolbar menu.

When I open the LibreOffice main page (LibreOfficePortable.exe), there are no icons in the left hand pane but the top menu (File, Tools & Help) is displayed.

Finally, I cannot adjust the Libreoffice options. I can open the Options-LibreOffice form, but whichever option group I select in the left pane (the folder menu), the right pane stays the same - stuck at User Data.
The same behavior is exhibited when opening the Customize form (from Tools > Customize) - the Customize form is stuck at Menu = File and Menu Content displays.

Any suggestions - and yes, I have tried re-downloading the libreoffice portable pack.

Strange stuff

I'm on Win8.1 64 and not seeing any of that. Have you tried renaming your existing LO dir so that when you install from the pack it creates a new one i.e. won't be picking up any left over configuration options ?

Yes - in fact the first time

Yes - in fact the first time I noticed the anomaly was when I updated through the Portable Apps updater.

I reinstated the old LO and downloaded, removed the LO5.1 update (deleted entire folder) and then re-downloaded the paf.exe file and installed the LO 5.1 to a new directory.

Same thing happened - no top menu and really strange behavior.

thinking aloud

Win7 64 isn't so rare that no-one else will have tried it. My next guesses would be to try the non-portable which I think will probably display the same symptoms and then work from there.

LO 5.1 Missing top menu

Noticed the same thing with both Windows 7 Professional as well Windows 8.1 Professional. This is true with both the PortableApps version as well the locally installed versions. I haven't tried erasing the old install directory before installing the new version. Will give that a try and report results.

Thanks

Whew! It's good to know I'm not the only one to experience this.

Please do return with your results.

Same here - no menus in LO5.1

Setup: Windows7 Professional, 64bit.

Problem is 100% reproducible.

Tried the following: Deinstall LO5.1 using right-click on the app-icon in the Portableapps Launcher and selecting "uninstall". Checked if there are any leftovers in the Portableapps Program folder - nope. Closed and re-opened the Portableapps Launcher and installed LO5.1. Problem still there :-(.

My next attempt was deinstalling LO5.1 as described above, manually downloading the Libreoffice .paf-file and installing it from via the Portableapps-Launcher (Apps > Install new App) - again same problem: no menus.

I'm really curious what's causing problem and even more what's the cure against it...

Resizing LO-Window - menus appear when window is small enough

Hi,
Just noticed that when you resize the LO-window and make it really small, i.e. about the size that only one line of icons within that window, the top menu suddenly appears.

But - as soon as you make that window bigger again everything is gone - i.e. no menu, no icons no nothing - just a simple empty white window Sad

Really annoying sitting in front of one of the the best office suites out there left with a single empty window not being able to anything useful with it...

Probably a bug

I have also detected the same issue with this new version. Furthermore I can't work with a new opened document (look my recently created post with the topic "Cursor not visible"). Meanwhile I've downloaded an other portable older version LO 4.4.7 via X-LibreOffice 4.4.7 [rev19] , which works correctly.

Proper 4.4.7, Report to TDF not us

You can get the proper 4.4.7 pack here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/LibreOffice%20Portable/

Keep in mind 4.4.x is discontinued and may have security implications.

Please test a local install of 5.0.x and 5.1.x. If they fail, please report the bugs to The Document Foundation. Please do not report them here as we can't do anything about them and The Document Foundation does not read these threads.

Bug appears not in all Windows OS

Meanwhile I checked LO ver5.1.0 on my laptop, on which is installed Windows Vista. And there all works fine. Accordingly the described issue occurs depending on the installed OS. On my currently used computer, on which the issue occurs, is installed Windows 8.1.

Test Local, Report to Publisher

Before continuing to post here, please test a local install of LibreOffice 5.1.0 and 5.0.4 to verify that the issue is with the base app. Once you have verified it like others, please report it to the publisher (The Document Foundation). We don't make the base app and don't accept bug reports for it. The LibreOffice folks won't know of you posting here. Additional details posted here won't help fix the issue.

LO ver5.0.5 works fine with Windows 8.1

The older portable version 5.0.5 on your website works correctly with Windows 8.1, i. e. the base app of the version 5.1.0 has a bug. Of course is it necessary to report it to the publisher. Nevertheless, I am convinced that my contributions are useful to other LibreOffice folks. Because through my research I give users indications, which portable versions work currently properly until the bug fixed. And I think such information can not hurt certainly. Accordingly I am convinced, that other LibreOffice folks surely interested in such meaningful informations.

Working Fine

Except it's mostly noise here. LibreOffice 5.1 both portable and local works just fine on my Windows 8.1 x64 machine. And my Windows 10 laptop. And for the vast majority of users. So, it's not likely a bug in the base app. It's likely due to a specific conflict (most often a bad video driver or the like) on a small minority of user's devices. They may already have the fix included with 5.1.1 which is currently a release candidate. I'd suggest trying that locally installed as well as if it isn't fixed in that, it's not going to be fixed for a while. And you should report that to the publisher ASAP. I can't assist as it works without issue on every machine and VM. Reporting additional details here doesn't help fix the bug.

useful hint

Thank you for this useful hint. Indeed I will now report it to publisher. But can it also be, that a virus is the reason for my my problem? Because a few days ago I've caught a virus, which all my multimedia files with the extension * .micro has made unusable.

Fail on that machine?

If it only fails on that machine and no other, there's a chance the virus could have broken something on that machine.

I have now decided to install Windows 10 on my machine and hope, that then all problems are removed. I think that is the simplest way to solve it.

Upgrade to Windows 10

After Upgrade to Windows 10 works LO ver5.1.0 now fine on my computer. Therefore must be a conflict between Windows 8.1 and LO ver5.1.0.

More Likely Your Virus

LibreOffice 5.1.0 works fine in portable and local mode on my Windows 8.1 x64 machine, so it's not a Windows 8.1 issue. It's more likely due to the virus you had.

Elimination of virus

I have think also about that possibility. Now moved me very intensively the question whether this virus was actually removed by this upgrade. While the upgrade was shown me that my files are copied. Thus could it be, that this virus may still be present, or?

Scan

I'd recommend doing a full system scan with the built in Windows Defender and with Spybot Portable. Then use either McAfee Stinger Portable or KasperSky TDSSKiller Portable or both. You can also consider temporarily installing Avast or AVG or AntiVir and doing a full scan as well.

Usage of McAfee LifeSafe - Internet Security

On my machine was preinstalled from the beginning the fee-based version of McAfee LifeSafe - Internet Security. But a complete scan with McAfee doesn't find any Virus. Of course I know, that no program is perfect in search after a virus.

More Than One

I'd recommend using more than one. Oftentimes a given antivirus will miss something or have a false positive, but using 3 or more will rule out a false positive or figure out an actual infection.

Don't install more than one and have it running at the same time, though. They'll step all over each other and slow your system down.

Don't forget to run an additional scan without your compromised system booted! There is some nasty malware out there that is capable to hide completely, when the system is running. So, don't forget to boot up your machine from a rescue disk (don't make that with your compromised system, use another one) and do a scan "from the outside".
If you really had a virus in the past, remember to change all your passwords as you can't be shure that your system was not compromised so far that keyloggers had been used in the meantime.

Elimination of Micro File Extension Malware

Firstly great thank for your thoughts regarding the elimination of the virus of my computer. The virus on my computer has made all my multimedia files (video files, picture files, pdf files etc.) unusable in this way, that these files get an additional extension .micro. For example was the file picture.jpg changed to picture.jpg.micro. Of course my first idea was useless of renaming the appropriate files. The hacker send me instructions in a text file, how I can change all these disabled files. To this end I should go to a specific web page, where I could get a fee-based decryption code. Here you can get more informations about this virus: how-to-remove-micro-file-extension-malware.

I have also used such a rescue disk in the past. Personally I have used the rescue disk of Avira. Here are more informations about the rescue disk of Avira: rescu disk of Avira. The only problem for me is now the fact, that in the user manual of Avira is explained, for which OS that rescue disk is valid. But in this user manual isn't mentioned the Windows 10 OS, which I use now on my computer.

backups

the only sure way out of a ransomware infection
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ransomware
is backups made before the infection, anything else is just sticking plaster on a serious wound

I see you have another system in place, this is a good start

Good luck, I hope you don't lose too much

system recovery

Of course a backup granted a higher guarantee of safety. But even so a backup is not a 100% solution. In the past I have used an appropriate backup program by the manufacturer Acronis. But even such a backup is only a certain state of the computer from which on last end you does not know exactly, whether it is correct. For example I use a Dell computer, on which the safety program "Dell Backup and Recovery" in the basic variant is preinstalled. This tool allows me to restore a factory image, which really completely removes all viruses. This seems to be the only 100% solution.

Im'finding problems, too. For me 5.10 is greatly bugged.

Not only it doesn't show the green left side menu - open, models, create a new writer or calc or impress etc. , it doesn't show the file - edit - show menu on a Writer document, but THE WORST IT DOESN'T SHOW a previously written document, and I can't make any change on it. This is not true on THIS PC (UbuntuStudio, version 4.2.8.2) but it happened on a Win7 laptop where I had to install the "Still"/Previous Version 5.05 where all things are OK. FOR me this 5.10 version is a PITA.

LO 5.1 Missing top menu

The 5.1.0 release notes (https://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/) refer to a potential OpenGL rendering issue on Windows machines and offer a solution. They did the trick for me (I'm on Windows 7): brought back the top menus as well as the left hand pane icons on the LO main page. The suggested solution requires playing with the 'Options' menu, where I encountered the same behaviour as Dedanaan above: the right hand pane stays the same no matter which group you select on the left hand side, so you can't get to the "View" subgroup to make the changes needed. The workaround for me was to resize the 'Options' window: this re-rendered its contents. Now, LO still isn't quite as snappy and responsive as before the update, but at least it's usable again.
