Currently not intended for a portable version?

Same as FF45

It is functionally equivalent to FF45 right now. FFESR will go to 45 when FF46 comes out.

ESR Version Progression

Complete details on how ESR gets updated version-wise in Mozilla's eyes (sometimes two versions) and ours (a split of the two) is outlined here: https://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#esr

If you're looking to switch to the leading edge of ESR when it's released as stable as well, you're not using ESR as intended and would be much better served by using the stable channel.

I've installed the full ESR

I've installed the full ESR-45 release in a VM now, although I prefer portable stuff for easier throwing profiles around.

It gives me the same headache now as the Std. 45 (portable) with some specific extensions. About time again to look out for alternative stuff, however I see that lots of extensions are just simply dropped now.

Not a problem

Just do a custom install of the "full" [Mozilla] release to the same folder used by the portable version. There's no difference between one and the other than the launcher and the placement of folders (for use by the launcher). Either way, 45 is 45... and more and more add-ons are being broken by Mozilla with each new release (by design).

45 is 45

Version 45 is version 45 regardless of channel or local vs portable.

Some extensions are unmaintained and don't get updated to changes in Firefox's UI or APIs. It's usually best to stop using them as there could be other underlying issues with extensions that don't have ongoing support and maintenance.
