it keeps saying something about timing out and refuses to ever load the download. cannot use the paf platform to download either as file size is to huge

Can you please provide further information as here: include relevant details on your current system (operating system version, 32 vs 64-bit, full install path, new install vs upgrade, etc)
Also the TDF mirror you're using, if possible - this should be indicated on a direct download, for me it shows up in Firefox's Save/Cancel download prompt as http://tdf.mirror.rafal.ca, which happens to be the closest geographic mirror to me.
