AIMP instance already running

A couple of days ago, I run AIMP4 from my Portableapps USB drive.
After trying to change some settings it stopped responding and I had to kill the program through System Explorer.
On the next attempt to run AIMP a dialog box showed, stating that an instance of AIMP was already running, and suggesting to terminate it before relaunching.
The dialog box title is "AIMP Portable (PortableApps.com Launcher)", so that's the reason I'm asking on this forum.
Searching the AIMP supposedly running process gave no result, nor did restarting the machine.
I tried to spot all files in the AIMP folder and subfolders having the most recent date, but none of them seemed to be the culprit.
I even tried reinstalling AIMP, but got no success: the message still keeps showing.
Launching the AIMP executable directly, i.e. not using the launcher, brings up AIMP fine.
I guess it's a problem with the launcher finding a somehow broken environment, but how can I resolve it?

Reinstall?

By reinstall, do you mean you just installed a new copy of AIMP Portable over the old one? Or did you delete your existing copy and then reinstall it? The former will only fix corrupt install files. The latter will fix settings issues.

I first installed over the old copy, but nothing changed.
I then deleted the old installation and installed AIMP again: same result, it keeps saying AIMP is already running.
Is there some lock file around, or some flag about running apps that could have been changed to "running" and remained that way?
Just some wild thoughts Smile

Another User Account

Is it possible another user account has it running? Do you see any of these processes in Task Manager when you select to show all processes from all users? AIMPPortable.exe, AIMP.exe, AIMPac.exe, AIMPate.exe, AIMPlib.exe, UpdateInstaller.exe

No other user accounts

On this computer I only use one user account, so it cannot be running from another account.
None of the processes you mention are running.
One more test I performed: running the launcher from outside PortableApps gives the same problem.
Does the launcher check for some setting inside PortableApps before running the app?

No Other Settings

There are no other external setting that affect it. If you try AIMP Portable on another PC, you'll likely see that it works without issue. I'm assuming you've long-since rebooted this PC.

Incidentally, what setting were you trying to change? Are you sure you didn't somehow copy AIMP elsewhere? Have you searched your whole PC for other copies of AIMP.exe? Have you fully scanned your PC for viruses?

Clean machine

I'll try on another PC, I'm sure you're right about that.
Yes I rebooted the PC several times since the problem started.
I reloaded some plugins from a previous AIMP3 installation, and was trying to restore an old playlist from AIMP3 when AIMP hung.
Following your suggestion, I searched the whole PC for AIMP files, and found some files in %APPDATA%.
Deleting the folder and reinstalling AIMP portable brought no changes.
I also scanned the PC for viruses: none were found.
I'll let you know about running on another machine.

Issue resolved

The issue seems to be resolved.
As I told you, I deleted the AIMP folder in %APPDATA% and reinstalled AIMP after uninstalling it.
This didn't work, but after rebooting the PC it DID work!
Somehow the %APPDATA% folder seems to be cached by the system.
Thanks for your assistance.
