Hi,
I have Firefox portable version 45 on my windows laptop. Now I want to update to version 47 portable.
But it appears that there are two ways to update, and I don't know which one is right:
1) The build-in update possibility inside Firefox by selecting menu button / ? / About Firefox as it's described here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version
or...
2) Download new portable version from portableapps.com and overwrite the old version as it's described here: https://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#upgrading
Does way 1) also works in this portable Firefox or is it only recommended for normal Firefox installations?
Thanks a lot,
Greetings from Germany!
The updater works portably with Firefox Portable though it may leave an empty folder or two behind on the local PC. Note that this will update Firefox but not the FirefoxPortable.exe launcher which makes it portable. Many releases this launcher receives an update which will usually be mentioned in the release announcement or appear as a Fixed bug in the tracker. It will also only update the current bit-version of Firefox you are running. So, if you move back and forth between a 32-bit Windows 7 machine and a 64-bit Windows 10 machine, it will update once on both of them.
Updating the whole thing by installing new over old is the preferred method. This is what the PortableApps.com Platform does automatically.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
