[Fixed] Redirection (302) error when updating apps hosted on SourceForge

Hi,
I have had no problems by updating portable apps before but now there are errors all the time! The errors like that: Redirection (302). What is it?

Local Issue

Likely, you have a software firewall or something else installed locally that is interfering with the redirects. The PortableApps.com Platform's updater uses Windows' own internet components to handle the download. It says "hey Windows, download this exact file please", then Windows does the download and passes back whether it works or not. That Redirection (302) error is being passed to us by Windows to say that it couldn't handle a common redirect for some reason. The only time I've seen this happen when there wasn't a major SourceForge configuration going on is when a local software firewall or antivirus has messed things up a bit.

I can assist more if you tell me one specific app (app name and version) you are downloading and experiencing the error on as well as your Windows version and what antivirus, antimalware, and firewall you are using.

Same Issue Here

I've started running into this problem as well, running an update this morning.

The following applications appear to have updated successfully:

CPU-Z
DSynchronize
Foxit Reader
GPU-Z
LibreOffice
Skype

The following applications failed to update:

7-Zip
CrystalDiskInfo
CrystalDiskMark
DVDStyler
FileZilla
Google Chrome
Kaspersky TDSSKiller
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird
Notepad++
Stellarium

The error dump window afterward indicated the following files as having Redirection (302) errors:

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/7-ZipPortable_16.04.paf.exe
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/CrystalDiskInfoPortable_7....
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/CrystalDiskMarkPortable_5....
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/DVDStylerPortable_3.0.2.pa...
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/FileZillaPortable_3.23.0.2...
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/FirefoxPortable_50.1.0_Eng...
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/GoogleChromePortable_55.0....
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/KasperskyTDSSKillerPortabl...
(Runs off the edge of the window at this point.)

I will attempt to perform the update on an open network solely with the default Windows firewall shortly to see if the problem is consistent.

Results of Additional Testing

Attempting update while on an unmanaged network with only default the Windows firewall, and antivirus (Kaspersky) completely disabled, exhibited the exact same result.

For grins, I attempted to update a thumb drive that had not yet been upgraded to PortableApps 14.2.
The update failed due to Redirection (302) error.
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/PortableApps.com_Platform_...

I downloaded the installer manually to perform the platform upgrade. This worked fine.

Once that was done, the following applications were in need of updates:

7-Zip *
CPU-Z
CrystalDiskInfo *
CrystalDiskMark *
DSynchronize
DVDStyler *
FileZilla *
Foxit Reader
Google Chrome *
gPodder *
GPU-Z
Kaspersky TDSSKiller *
LibreOffice
Miranda IM *
Mozilla Firefox *
Mozilla Thunderbird *
Notepad++ *
Skype
Stellarium *
uTorrent *
Warzone *

Items marked with asterisks failed to update. So, it's consistent in what's working and what isn't.

Wondering if Sourceforge changed something on their end?

Well, Now.

Just took the same thumb drive and dropped it into a fully-patched Windows 10 system. (Had been doing all of this on a fully-patched Windows 7 system.) Configurations otherwise nearly identical. Lo and behold, it works fine there. Hmmm.

SourceForge, Working Here, Location and SF Mirror?

What the apps you have an issue downloading have in common is that they are hosted on SourceForge.

I am able to download them all on both a Windows 10 and a fully patched Windows 7 machine without any issues. So it is not an overall issue on Windows 7.

So, next we need to figure out exactly what the issue is. It may not be your choice of SourceForge mirror because in theory, you should get the same mirror by default on all machines in the same geographic location. To be sure, try downloading 7-Zip Portable within IE on both machines and post what SourceForge mirror it gives you for the actual download.

Additionally, is the "fully patched" Windows 7 machine running with IE11 and all relevant updates via Windows Update?

Errors by updating portable applications!

Today I have updated my portables applications. Some of those applications could not be updated with the same error: Redirection (302). Here are these applications:

1. McAfee Stinger -- ver. 12.1.0.2231
2. Miranda IM -- ver. 0.10.65
3. Mozilla Thunderbird -- ver. 45.6.0
4. Telegram Desktop -- ver. 1.0

All of these applications I have had to update manually.
I have the OS Windows 8.1 and the antivirus McAfee.
Does anybody know what to do and how to avoid such errors?

Yup, same problem. First

Yup, same problem. First time I've ever seen it, and it started around Christmas. No major changes on my Win7(64b) system.

Here is a link to the screengrab of the error.

Local Setting Error, Here's the Fix

This issue is caused by setting Windows to alert you on crossing zones (HTTPS to HTTP). Go to Windows search and enter "internet options" and click on Internet Options in the results list. In the Internet Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck the box next to "Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode". Click OK. It will work again.

This setting is not on by default and turning it on will break many apps that utilize Windows networking components. A future update to the platform will have a patch to work around this issue.

Fixed in PortableApps.com Platform 14.3

This issue is fixed in today's PortableApps.com Platform 14.3 release without needing to adjust the advanced Internet Options setting mentioned above. This will allow users to freely move among computers even on PCs with this setting changed.

Still Broke

I have updated the platform to the latest version (14.3) and still get the error. It seems to only be an issue with files hosted on sorceforge. I have to downlaod and install them manually.

Redirection 302?

Are you specifically getting a "Redirection (302)" error? If not, then your error is not what is being discussed and addressed above.

If you are still getting this specific error, then it would seem something is preventing the platform from updating your registry. Please try the fix mentioned above to return the obscure Windows setting to the default: https://portableapps.com/comment/231018#comment-231018
