Errors Downloading Apps via Platform "Unable to download file"

I'm getting the following error on application updates in a machine with XP SP3
Unable to download the file. This could be due to a proxy or network issue or the hosting server not permitting downloads from your location. File:http://dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/kritaportable_3.1.2.1.paf.exe
and it goes on with the next apps.

What should I do to fix it.
Reinstalled IE8, no improvements doing so.

Try again, try different mirror

I'd suggest trying again, possibly after setting a different mirror on sourceforge - possibly the one you're accessing doesn't have the file cached properly. Which mirror are you currently using?

I'm not sure what you mean as the "launcher/PA Plataform" doesn't seem to have a setting to switch mirror (at least in the interface>Options). I can download applications from the browser... but is too much work to update all the apps.

Different Error

This platform update was for a specific error ("Redirect Error (403)") caused by setting an obscure Windows setting in Advanced Internet Options. It's unrelated to what I see above.

Can you download the affected file from Internet Explorer on the machine you are having trouble with? Both IE and the Platform (and lots of other apps) use the Windows internet components to handle the connection. If they are broken, none of those should work.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Error?

Are you getting any kind of error? Do you use a proxy of any sort? Was it a normal or modified install (something to remove some Windows components for instance)? Have you applied all available Windows patches? In particular, the patches that allow Windows XP to handle SHA2 security certificates.

Are you getting any kind of error?

It says (translated): Internet Explorer can't display the web page.

Do you use a proxy of any sort?

Sometimes temporally in Firefox (HTTP Proxies) but not in IE.

Was it a normal or modified install (something to remove some Windows components for instance)?

Normal but maybe in the past I removed some (should check it).

Have you applied all available Windows patches? In particular, the patches that allow Windows XP to handle SHA2 security certificates.

I use WSUS to install updates, I had the impression they were, last installed updates were installed on 2015-10. But maybe if I uninstalled IE those patches are missing (I don't remember if IE updates are listed as such (like office updates) or just as generics KB***. I can run WSUS to check for missing updates...

Uninstalled IE?

If you "uninstall IE" using a third party tool, it generally breaks Windows' internet components which the PA.c Updater/App Store as well as the PA.c online installers rely on.

Errors Downloading Apps via Platform

my Windows XP SP3 pc

============
Wednesday 15-03-2017

I could update the portable apps platform to 14.4

But updating the apps is impossible.
I get the warning :
"
Unable to download the file. This could be due to a proxy or network issue or the hosting server is not permitting downloads from your location. File:http://dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/....paf.exe
"
(submit dots by any portable app)

I disabled my Trend Micro anti-virus and my CCleaner surveillance with the same warning as result.

The update connection to dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/ via the portable apps platform is broken.

============
Saterday 18-03-2017: [SOLVED] Errors Downloading Apps via Platform

Meantime I updated certain apps via the [alternative solution] (see separate message):
Download the necessary apps from: https://portableapps.com/apps and Install these apps in your portable apps map, where they 'live'/belong.
Namely:
7-Zip
Gvim

So, only 4 apps remain to update, namely:
The Gimp 2.8.2
Google Chrome 57.0 (incompatible with WinXP SP3)
Mozilla Thunderbird 45.8 (incompatible with WinXP SP3)
Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.5 (incompatible with WinXP SP3)

Saturday I tried again, and my experience was that the update connection to dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/ via the portable apps platform is NOT broken any more.
I could download (and install)...
... except for The Gimp 2.8.2
I get the warning :
"
Unable to download the file. This could be due to a proxy or network issue or the hosting server is not permitting downloads from your location. File:http://dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/....paf.exe
"

So I manually downloaded and installed The Gimp 2.8.2 via the [alternative solution] (see separate message).

Sunday 19-03-2017 "Unable to download" when choosing 1 file

Finally I understand the warning when updating apps via the portable apps platform update :
"
Unable to download the file. This could be due to a proxy or network issue or the hosting server is not permitting downloads from your location. File:http://dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/....paf.exe
"
(submit dots by any portable app)

I have this warning when highlighting only 1 app at a time to update.
So when choosing for at least 2 apps to update, the portable apps platform update works fine.

I do not know why the link to dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/ via the portable apps platform is broken when only choosing 1 app to update.
I did not change anything in my computer/software settings.
I never use Internet Explorer.

============
I have also one important remark (nothing to do with the above solved broken link to download from sourgeforce):
Mr. John T. Haller,
Can you please make a setting per app, to ignore updates (for example in case of incompatible with WinXP SP3).
Now I have to remind, while updating, which apps not to update, if I ignore, they will not work any more.
My solution for that problem is that I changed the app description, and added "NoUpdt", so I know not to update that app. But a setting to ignore the update per app should be better.

Thanks a lot.

[alternative solution] Unable to download the file via Platform

Concerning: Errors Downloading Apps via Platform "Unable to download file"

Thursday 16-03-2017 on my Windows XP SP3 pc.

I get the warning :
"
Unable to download the file. This could be due to a proxy or network issue or the hosting server is not permitting downloads from your location. File:http://dowloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/....paf.exe
"

[alternative solution] Unable to download the file via Platform

Download the necessary apps from:
https://portableapps.com/apps

Install these apps in your portable apps map, where they 'live'/belong. They will install/upgrade.
This works for me.

Hopefully this alternative solution also helps someone else.

Working on XP SP3 with IE7 and with IE8

I fired up my clean Windows XP virtual machine. This is running a fully patched Windows XP install with no optional updates applied other than an upgrade to IE7 (can't recall if that was a standard or optional update). I was able to download the current release of Firefox Portable without issue. I chose this because it's hosted on SourceForge.

I then upgraded it to IE8, rebooted, applied the security patch, rebooted. I was again able to download the current release of Firefox Portable within the platform without issue.

So, we know that Windows XP SP3 fully patched with either IE7 or IE8 is still working with the platform and with SourceForge even with the transition to SHA2 SSL.

For those affected, please try to download Firefox in Internet Explorer via this link: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/FirefoxPortable_52.0_Engli...

If it fails, you won't be able to download via the platform. Something is wrong with Windows' internet configuration or something is broken in Windows' internet components. If a few people could post the exact error they get in IE, maybe we can track down the cause.

Alex 256 above said: It says (translated): Internet Explorer can't display the web page.

Could you please post the exact error in the original language?

I apologize for the late reply, I have yet to run wsus, I will get into it the next days... and post if there's any improvement.

Could you please post the exact error in the original language?

Sure, I'm afraid it doesn't say much, here it is in spanish:
"Internet Explorer no puede mostrar la página web"

which error do you mean:

which error do you mean:
"Internet Explorer no puede mostrar la página web"
Google translate: "Internet Explorer can not display the webpage"
do'nt know if this warning has something to do with Portable Apps download.

OR
"Unable to download the file"
because this is the one the topic is going about.
Where I suspect a broken link from the Portable Apps installation platform to the Sourge Force download files.
