octogenarian newby win 10 cant install platform .No apps populated no apps in directory. up date says all apps up to date but where ?
checked usb and format ok ..try same install o old xp get same result..Try install very old apps suite that went in ok so format and back to 14.4.1 just grey start menu.. Im so not with it how do i tell if i get an answer to this ?

Did you happen to hide the apps by accident? You can click the Apps button and then click Show Hidden Apps to check.
Are you on a super low color screen? The platform may not work with 256 color display setups any longer.
How did you install your apps and the platform? If you already had a very old portableappps suite, when you download and run the PortableApps.com Platform installer, you need to select the directory with Start.exe or StartPortableApps.exe to install to (usually the root of your portable device or cloud folder). If you select to install to the PortableApps directory inside that folder, it won't find your apps. It's best to update from within the platform itself going forward.

checked no hide no change std working full col screen have installed in root of formatted stick just clk the exe file when two items came up in directory i chose xenon file manager and that has installed ok and working it shows in start menu as would expect..
strange i can install the ancient ver of PA. cleared that out with format before try 4.1 again.i just cantthink of anything i can do
am trying on 1 GB stick tried bigger stick no change.Start menu not rey now selec tdifferent theme apps folder says 15 Mb so i must have something somewhere
If you install the PortableApps.com Platform to X:\ directly, you should see Start.exe that you run. You apps should be in X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable and similar. If you'd installed the PortableApps.com Suite a while ago to X:\PortableApps instead of X:\, your apps would be in X:\PortableApps\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable and similar and the PortableApps.com Platform you run from X:\Start.exe will not find them.

i have a clean new installation clean Mstick yes i see apps folder 15Mb and the exe icon i fire it up from.... the old apps suite formatted out do the apps come from the folder or download i assume the apps folder as installed has a selection for basic platform.

Just to be clear, the platform has no apps installed at all by default. I thought you were upgrading an old version. We stopped offering prepackaged sets of apps a while back because they'd be too out of date. Now, you download and run the platform and it prompts you to select the apps you'd like to download to create your own suite of apps with only the apps you want.

hello john thanks i did think it may be that . As the apps folder is 15Mb are the apps in there or do i do a download some how to put themn in it . Then populate start menu from the app . i have gone get more apps but the only apps that come in the directory are yumi-zar-barcode-zoomit-zsoft uninstaller non of which i want . So how do i get at list of all available apps ? i dont seem to be able to do it from the directory. Sorry if i appear a bit dim but nothing says what to actually do especially as you say it was pre populated once upon a time .
To add apps to your platform, you click the Apps icon and then Get New Apps and then select how you want it sorted. I recommend by category.
I'm still unsure what you are upgrading from as we haven't distributed any apps with the platform in 7 years. The platform by default is blank and should automatically show you a full list of hundreds of available apps on first run. If you already have some apps, it will not show that. Perhaps a fresh install to a new location would be in your best interest.

im not updating from anything on this new pc...What you say is that which i would expect . i will leave this Mstick in then add another to get different drive letter [which i think is what you mean by new location] What size stick do i need for typical app sselection i am using 1 Gb well i have done that newstick in which gives next drive letter full new install and all i get when directory shows is as before only list of apps starting with X or Z. It seems it does not wantto fill the directory. If i go up date it says all apps [of which i cant see] up to date.
Going back to original stick get more apps again it only shows end alphabetically 8 apps xz

i have been able to make a small stick work on xp but when put in win 10 again could not see any more apps in the directory ..
seems win 10 is blocking the directory . Am trying to make another stick in very old slow xp with more apps to try. The ones that did come over with other stick do run .So the problem is looking like win10 wont populate the directory which stopsyouin your tracks as of my first post

Could you please try temporarily downloading a fresh copy of the platform and installing it right to your Desktop directory (so you'd see Start.exe, Documents, and PortableApps right on your desktop). Then run it (with all other copies of the platform closed) and it should prompt you to install some apps and show you the full list. I'd like to eliminate an issue with your specific drive next. When you're done, you can safely delete the Start.exe file and Documents and PortableApps folders it created (as long as they didn't exist beforehand, of course).

gosh thanks for your persistence followed instruction andit installed ok with full dir coming up as would expect at start.
so now its usb to win10
anything i use sticks for are ok even transfer between computers for all types offiles inc exe slide shows...
think i will have to have a break now getting mentally too tired so will return to forum tomorrow

It sounds like there's an issue of some sort with this drive. Either that or the USB port. I'd recommend copying everything off the drive, checking it for errors, if it finds any copy your stuff off again, format, then installing a fresh copy of the platform and manually moving your existing apps back on. Or, if it's an inexpensive drive and you have another drive, use another drive.

HI john i have tried 3 drives now on different usb ports .just done new install if when installing i look more details i see all the app ico s loading but agin when dir opens all i get is this as link. The same drives work on lod xp comp url link http://imgur.com/a/sYpVt

Is it only this computer that's having issues, then? And only when you use an external drive? But it works on this computer when installed to Desktop and the same drives that have issues on this computer work on others, correct?

If that's the case, something is up on this specific PCs when external drives are used. I can't figure out what it is offhand, but it's not related to our software. You can see that our software even works on the affected PC when run from an internal drive. If this PC has had an infection in the past of some sort or was installed as a modded version of Windows (third party app that 'minimizes' Windows or removes components), that could be a possible cause. As could a bad USB driver. Unfortunately, there's nothing else I can really do from my end to help figure out what it is. You could try reinstalling Windows over itself which should keep you from having to reinstall all your apps (I'd suggest a full backup first to be safe). Or, to really ensure that all possible software issues are eliminated, you could do a full Windows reinstall after a full backup. That's all I can really think of in terms of next steps.

thanks for all your efforts its like the picture a bit of a puzzle but i could build on old pc with xp...AS OEM i dont have a win 10 disc so i will first investigate the usb driver. I have a EASUS image back up but that will put me well back before major win 10 up date.

You can create a disc or bootable USB drive using Microsoft's tool here:

Windows 10 licenses are tied specifically to the PC, so you should not have to worry about an OEM edition or a product key at all. At least in theory. I'd suggest a full backup as well as grabbing your Windows 10 product key with something like ProduKey first to be safe.

you are so helpful thanks. I have been able to complete my stick on win 10 by download the app i wanted then install new app worked fine on stick part made on XP.
Can i be cheeky and ask you a separate question. As you realize i am old and so is my equipment . On my PPC 10.4 mac i cant now see any maps or video ot bbc i player as i cant up date safari or flash. Now could i get a macppc portable so could run up to date browser to get me round this . Looking on your site i cant tell if this is possible .
We don't do Mac native apps as there isn't much interest. If we did, they likely wouldn't run on 10.4 PPC anyway. There are no up to date browsers that run on PPC I'm aware of. And I don't think Wine variants will work on it so you can't run our software as a workaround.

i copied the orig usb stick to a new 8 gb stick all went ok i then copied to partition on my hard drive copy ok works but same directory problem . Now for some reason i went to the new mem stick and went add progs and bingo i get directory.
This means two mem sticks which work apps ok and partition on hard drive wont populate directory yet another mem stick does . That seems to confound the whole issue. All the mem sticks were format fat 32 to start. I just thought you might like to knowthats all in case you get another person with same problem. Thank john
