Setup: Win7x64, Notepad++ v.7.4.2
At least once a week, I need to re-enter my Notepad++ Portable settings and I can't seem to figure out why. Is anyone else seeing this? Is there a workaround beyond just backing up the \Data folder?
Thanks,
Wf

I haven't seen that happening myself here. Admittedly, I use the installed version of Notepad++ more than the portable one, though. Is there anything correlated with it happening that you can think of? Even if left running when Windows is closed, it should be able to recover. The only custom code is around language handling, everything else is just file moves. Though there are a lot of them since Notepad++ uses a ton of settings files.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Yeah, that's just it: it seems to happen randomly. I have a LOT of other PA software running simultaneously so I don't think it's an issue there. I'll keep digging.

What type of storage medium is your PA software running on?
HDD, SSD, Flash/Thumb Drive, etc?
Given that Notepad++ Portable has a lot of settings files to move around and the amount of portable apps running, depending on what type of drive it is installed on, the amount activity on the drive may have hit the bottleneck of how fast the controller in the drive can handle it, or the drive could be starting to fail, or it could be Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware software interfering (if that's installed, some people don't).
More information is needed for anyone to really be of help though (like connection type (USB 2.0, USB 3.x, etc), brand/make/model of storage device).
I'm running the storage from an SSD. It's entirely possible it's caused by the anti-virus. On this machine I don't have the ability to setup or modify the security settings.

I don't think make and model are at fault here. I think if there were other it would have affected one of the two dozen or so other PA wrappers I'm using on the machine.

The Anti-Virus is quite likely the culprit then (though a test would be needed). Is there an option to temporarily disable it? (some provide it, even giving the option of a timed use)
That option would allow you to properly determine if it's the Anti-Virus if it's there.
Not everyone will run into issues because of brand/make/model, but the reason I added that bit was due to personal experience (though that particular experience was fixed by a firmware update for my SSD, and another one where a thumb drive wasn't working properly when plugged into USB 2.0 (even though it should of), but worked fine... for the most part... when plugged into USB 3.0)
EDIT: It would also be a good idea to make sure that there is a file named "doLocalConf.xml" in the "App\Notepad++" folder. Just in case that somehow got removed.
I am testing the PA version of Notepad++ on the same setup as webfork & have experienced the same problem with the settings disappearing, along with the files that were opened. It seems to happen randomly. I do have the installed version of Notepad++ on the same machine, but it is closed when this happens. I am hoping to move to the PA version in the future & hope this problem is corrected since it will prevent me from moving to the PA version.
thanks for your consideration & also for providing PA.

Is it possible that it happens when you update your plugins?
Also, can you (both of you preferably) post a list of what plugins you have installed? It could be that the issue is caused by the launcher and a certain plugin (or even combination of plugins) not getting along properly.
Edit: It could also be a permissions issue (if you're running it on NTFS) caused by the fact that the plugin updater requires administrative privileges (a bug in my opinion), and thus some files may end up owned by "Administrator" instead of your current user, causing a potential for inability to access and/or write to them. Can you (either of you) tell if this could possibly be your issue?

Think I finally figured out what went wrong: I right-clicked on the Notepad program and pinned it to the taskbar. I wasn't using Notepad++ everyday so I didn't make the connection until later on.
Why?
Unless I'm mistaken, you can't pin the program to the taskbar, because the EXE that it's pinning is the Notepad++.exe file, NOT the wrapper program. When you launch the pinned program, it's instead launching .\App\Notepad++\notepad++.exe , which of course doesn't know to look for settings in the standard .\Data folder.
Workaround:
If you add a shortcut to Portable Notepad++ in the start menu and THEN right click on it and Pin to Taskbar, it should be fine.
Thanks everyone who chimed in about this. I'll mark this topic as closed but I'll keep digging on this topic as I know a lot of Notepad++ users.
