More and more apps no longer support WindowsXP after an upgrade.
But is there no way to
- add the last WinXP version in the repository as xxxxxWinXP (similar to 7-Zip64)
- or at least provide a download-area with the last WinXP versions
- or any other working solution for having also the latest WinXP version installed (manually or automatically)
I know, WindowsXP is obsolete, but still used a lot under certain conditions or special cases.
Would be great
Since the team is stretched out which means no new applications are added I would say the opposite.
Drop support for Windows XP (Really, we need to make people move out of this un secure system) let the developers put efforts in improving the suite.
@Drazick
Thank you for your opinion and concerns about my system.
But :
- Many can very well decide for themselves if WinXP is still ok / (in)secure / needed
- reason why I wrote "still used a lot under certain conditions or special cases"
- the work involved in mind I wrote "at least provide a download-area with the last WinXP versions" AND ALSO "installed manually"
So actually, the reply contains only
- personal opinions limited by knowledge of own environmental conditions/situations
- repetitions of what was already in the OP
- offtopic start op WinXP security discussion
Meaning
- WinXP will under certain conditions or special cases NEVER be insecure
- my questions (mainly sort of repository / download-area with the last WinXP versions) in the OP still stands
Thanks for your time
You're missing my point.
I don't enter to each one consideration what to run.
I'm saying that the resources of PortableApps are limited (Unfortunately).
As a user I'd like those resources be invested in the future and not in the past.
I, for one, Would like to see more new applications (Targeting Students, like Octave, WinPython, Julia, LyX, MiKTeX, TeXStudio, IPE, Designer.io) and resources in making the suite better.
PortableApps is the only think kept me on Windows, it is that great!
Anyhow, this is only my opinion.
The one which takes the decisions is John.
I am also one of those using many of the apps here for XP.
Drop XP?
This can be an idea, but absolutely not realistic for all cases. I have test equipment with embedded XP, costs some 50k$. If I want to upload test results from it to my workshop server, I need suitable FTP client. In such case I use the filezilla for XP from an usb stick and all works.
As there is no way to change or otherwise 'drop' XP here, as it is embedded, there is no other solution.
BTW I have also valuable Instruments windows 2000 and windows NT4.
In such cases there is nothing about security, the system can not be invaded by some malware, but still needs to communicate with local servers.

When I said Drop XP I meant do nothing, put no effort, into making things run on XP.
This is basically what's done and with a good added information on what's the latest version which did work.
One day the developers of FileZilla will drop XP support by themselves.
I wasn't implying do something on purpose not to support XP.
The ability to support XP without putting extra effort will go away by itself and it is a good thing.
it is just the advanatge of portable apps, as the archive might provide what one needs, even the original of the sw is not av any more.
So the importance is to have all these old versions archived and if possible marked.
For example filezilla, they dropped the XP support long time ago, but older versions here can be used without problems if found. So possible marking the versions is OK. The need is here probably for long time.
I am just setting up two notebooks with XP, they are needed to program some older but essential radio system. No way to run it on later windows.
So also here I was getting number of portable apps to make all work.

This is perfect.
PortableApps is a treasure and along with Wikipedia those are the projects I keep donating to as appreciation of what's done.
I wish more people donated and enlarge the resources of this project.
Never had intention [Suggestion] doing something on purpose to disable any application on Windows XP.
Maybe the right term is deprecation.
This is usually what's used in this context.
I just wish (Not that the decision is mine) resources were invested in new applications.
We don't monitor when apps lose XP compatibility unless announced by the publisher currently. Most publishers only list Windows 7 and up compatibility these days, even if it works on XP and Vista. When we're notified via either the publisher's notes, user testing, or our own testing, we will generally link to the last working version on Vista near the system requirements section of the app's homepage. As an example, there's a link to FileZilla Portable 3.9.0.1 in that section of its homepage: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/filezilla_portable#download_details
If you know of an app that no longer works on XP, please let us know. If you know of an app that no longer works on XP/Vista where we don't have a link to the last XP-compatible version, let us know about that and which version last worked. We'll try to get a link up to it in the same place on its homepage.
We probably won't put a page up with just the XP versions as they're more relevant on the actual app pages.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hi,
Having the link to the last XP-version at the download_details is ok too.
Actually I'm aware of one missing link : Blender.
Unfortunately I don't know the version as mine was Upgraded.
Normally I upgrade all Apps offered and it's only afterwards I am getting aware of the incompatibility issue.
Thanks
I added a link to Blender Portable 2.76b, the last one that worked on Windows XP to my knowledge, to the app's homepage.
When you notice a new incompatibility that we haven't noted on the app homepage, please comment on the news story announcing the now-incompatible version so that others will know as well. We'll update the post and the page.
Note that apps will continue to drop Windows XP support generally with no notice from the publisher. We'll continue to note as we're informed and update pages.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Great ! That's the correct one
In case another undocumented incompatibility is discovered I'll leave a note
Thanks
