Possible to Remove Languages from AOO?

Hi,

I just downloaded Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.4 - the "Standard" version. There are many languages included in that version. I only need English. Is it possible to remove the other languages? If so how do I do that? I'm really looking to reduce the size of disk space used for AOO Portable.

Doesn't Save Much Space

Oddly, the last couple versions of OpenOffice, our standard methods of removing languages doesn't save much space at all (I think it was only 50MB), that's why it's not part of the installer. This is different than the current LibreOffice issue where it will show an error if you remove languages after having them installed.

But Does that Mean I can Remove Languages

Thanks for the response, John.

However, back to my original questions. (Despite what the installer does now.) Is it possible to remove languages? If so, how does one do that?

Use Portable Apps on both Flash Drive and HDD/SSD.

Manually Remove Files

You need to manually remove individual files for other languages you do not need. Locations such as:

App\openoffice\share\autocorr\
App\openoffice\share\autotext\
App\openoffice\share\basic\Depot\
App\openoffice\share\fingerprint\
App\openoffice\share\readme\
App\openoffice\share\registry\
App\openoffice\share\template\
App\openoffice\share\wordbook\

Let me know how you make out and how much space you're able to save.

Reasonable Saving Made?

Hi John,

Here is what I got with a clean install of Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.4:

Size On Clean Install:
Size: 865 MB (907,458,076 bytes)
Size on Disk: 880 MB (923,340,800 bytes)
Contains: 7,251 Files, 772 Folders

Size After Removal of Obvious Non-English Languages:
Size: 783 MB (821,435,878 bytes) - Saving 82 MB
Size on Disk: 795 MB (833,961,984 bytes) - Saving 85 MB
Contains: 5,636 Files, 593 Folders - Saving - Files 1,615 - Folders 179

I just removed the obvious non-English language components at the locations you pointed to in your response.

I tried a quick test of OO Writer by writing in text in American and British English and it seems to function fine. Tested to see what would happen if I tried to use German as the locale setting - the document wouldn't even attempt a spell-check (which didn't surprise me). In any case personally I'd say a saving of around 82-85 MB is pretty good. Though you might think otherwise (fair enough). Personally I would think there is room for three iterations of PortableApps OO (1) English only (2) The current "Standard" version, and (3) The "All Languages" version. (Dare say, though, that arrangement might offend some people.) And at that an English only version would need to be done by someone with good expertise on packing for PortableApps and I suppose have at least some expert testing to see if things were working okay.

On another point entirely I'd note that the clean install of the "Standard" version of OO 4.1.4 is roughly 100 MB larger than the stated value at the download page which says "770 MB installed" As against the actual install size of 865-880 MB.

Use Portable Apps on both Flash Drive and HDD/SSD.
