Would it be considered self promoton if

I were to create a variant of the PortableApps Suite and include Floola (an iPod-manager) with it, it is not opensource (but I would have the author's permission of course!)? And then distribute it.

Yes, it would be

And you'd have to keep in mind that:

1. You'd have to recompile the menu without the PortableApps.com logo, call it something else and you couldn't use the theme or a theme based on it
2. It wouldn't be supported here (and that's why #1 is there so folks don't mistake your package for something from here)
3. Since it includes closed-source bits, you wouldn't be allowed to promote it here
4. You couldn't include Firefox, Thunderbird or Sunbird in your package (PortableApps.com has permission from Mozilla to package them into a suite and that permission is non-transferable)

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Really?...

John:

I'm a tad confused here - aren't the various Mozilla proggies Open-Source? If so, why would anyone need their permission to package them into a suite?...

They are open source

but still trademarked. Means you can only redistrebute the installer or you have to remove the name and logos. PortableApps.com has a special permission.

Logos and programs

You are free to recompile firefox, however if you want to distribute it to other people you have to remove the firefox logo and icon (not open source) unless you get permission from mozilla. Why? This allows mozilla to stop any virtual black hat corp to distribute fake firefox with spyware on it, or certain people from distributing firefox with their own added bugs yet still with mozilla's logo and the firefox names (thus hurting its image)

BTW

I think that an opensource alternative to floola is really easy to make, of course, without playing files... Just to administrate your ipod without pesky itunes.. Once you take a look at the ipod directory structure it is easy to make a program to "rip" almost anything to the ipod, seriously.

It could be used in conjunction to VLC so VLC could play the files if the user wants to.

Well

could I exclude Floola from it and put a text file in the package stating where to obtain it, since I am making an iPod Suite? As for Firefox, Thunderbird and Sunbird what email address do I email a request to include FF,TB and SB in my package?
