A quick question about platform

I'm familiar with the concept of portable applications, and I use the portable version of many of the applications that I use on a daily basis. But they don't need any special "platform" to run them - you just unzip them, and the configuration information is kept in a file instead of in the Windows registry. You can put the whole thing on a USB drive if desired, or wherever you want. So what exactly is the purpose of this PortableApps "platform"? What does it do? Why should I install it?

Apps Independent, Platform Ties Together

All our apps are independent and can run without the platform. We don't force you to use our platform to use our apps to try to artificially boost user numbers here.

Using the platform can make using all our apps easier, though. You can download and install any app in our directory with just a couple clicks. You can automatically update all your apps. You don't need to worry about manually unzipping files and possibly resetting your settings as happens with many zip apps.
