According to https://www.gimp.org/news/2018/05/20/gimp-2-10-2-released/#added-support... there should be support for HEIF image format. However when try to open any .heic file (iPhone photos) on Windows 10 (64bit) it's not recognized / "Unknown file type".
Any advice what could be the problem?

This is a know bug in GIMP itself, and should be fixed in the next release: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/1491
