About Microsoft Edge (web browser)

I've heard that Microsoft Edge is shifting to Chromium based browser, just like Google Chrome... You could do an online installer once it is officially released. It would be a nice addition to Portableapps.com.

re: Edge

I'm not against it but, as the site already has 4 Chromium-based browsers Opera, Iron, Maxthon (sort of) and Google Chrome, I think it remains to be seen what adding yet another Chromium-based browser would do for the site.

Registered just to add another voice on this. Would love a portable Edge because it will have benefits to battery usage on Windows machines as MS continues to optimize it for the OS and vice versa. I'm a Firefox guy but this would be the one Chromium based browser that makes sense for me.

EdgeDev

Whilst the Development and Beta Versions of EdgeDev are downloadable for Windows beta testing as a separate installer, there is no guarantee that the final version will be, i.e. Microsoft ay well decide to build the Chromium-based Edge into Windows 10, directly replacing the existing Edge Browser then why would it be available as a separate public download for Windows rather than via Windows Store or as an 'Optional' download within a Windows installation? No point making noise for something that may or may not exist and won't reach public release until some time in 2020. Also remember that Edge faces the same issues as other Chromium-based browsers, but instead of being tied to a Google Account, it's unusable unless tied to a Microsoft Account.

P.S. Currently testing on MacOS and it does seem to work well, but am resigned to the fact that if/when it reaches final release it will only be available via Apple's AppStore in the same way that all other Microsoft Apps are.

I would love a portable

I would love a portable version of Edge. IT has now been released and is available as its own installer.

Microsoft Edge (Chromium Based)

Even if this site were willing to create and maintain YACBB (Yet Another Chromium Based Browser) then, apart from obtaining the necessary permissions related to Microsoft branding (copyright) etc., one major practical issue is that there is no publicly available installer for the Windows version of Microsoft Edge, i.e. you can only download a stub installer which initiates the direct online install of Edge and any 'addons' Microsoft decides to include, e.g. MS Office Online links.

I sorta did it

i used the chrome portable files and renamed msedge.exe to chrome.exe , it sorta works but only your bookmarks get saved the extensions get saved locally so if you move it to another pc everything except the extensions will show up , you guys could probably easily fix that and provide only the portable app cause i know what to do with it

Stop

As previously advised in the other thread, illegal app sharing is not permitted or facilitated here.

This is your final warning prior to a temporary ban being implemented.

In addition, please take note of the forum guidelines, particularly the section on playing nice

Why Edge, spellchecking

Google Chrome has bad, next to useless Danish Spell checking. Edge works and might even be better than Firefox.

I made this account just for you ottosykora.

still not understand

Edge is on every windows machine, so why someone needs it portable?

Firefox is not on every computer, so a portable version is useful.
But Edge?

I am using it to test

I am using it to test different Edge Chromium/Chrome/Firefox/Opera versions in automated testing.
Would be awesome if someone could have a look into this and create an official solution, like for Chrome.
I have tried reusing the Chrome Portable launcher and replaced the files with Edge Chromium files and renamed it, so the command line is correct again, but Edge Chromium regularly crashes.

Microsoft Products

I suggest you read and inwardly digest Microsoft's Terms and Conditions:

- edge://terms/
- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Useterms/Retail/Windows/10/Useterms_Reta...

Short Version: It would be illegal to make, distribute, or even use, a portable version version of Microsoft Edge; The product's installation is licensed per Windows Installation (Device), its functionality is tied to the end User's Microsoft Account before it can work fully; and the licence also makes it mandatory for users to download updates only from Microsoft, which makes it even clearer that a portable version is not feasible.

BUT

But the portable files required to run edge portable without it including any microsoft files can still be distributed , download it from ms install it copy the edge folder to the empty edge folder in the portable program folder launch the portable app .... We use portable programs because we dont like losing our settings when we reinstall , what needs the most reinstalling you say? DUH WINDOWS....
So i say post the portable version without any microsoft files that cant be illegal at all!!!!!!!!!!

Not distributible

As noted above, it is not legal to distribute any version of Microsoft Edge in a portable form due to the license terms Microsoft has in place. This includes distributing the framework separately from the program files themselves (ie. online installer).
