Sandbox or Virtual Machine help

Hi there. I have an OLD program I need to use maybe once, not sure of it's condition. I know nothing about what to use or how to about running it in a safe environment, the terms I have heard of are sandbox and VM (Virtual Machine) I suppose. and help here is appreciated, I am using old WIN7 and have an XP available.
