These could be good alternatives to Camstudio. I'm looking for a simple program that can work reasonably well on old PCs (compatible with WinXP if possible).

OBS and ShareX both have done very well for me. OBS is a little more involved but has a lot more functionality. ShareX is wonderfully simple and effective for short videos.
