I found out my U3 equipped 512mb Traveldrive doesn't like my new laptop with vista very much. I uninstalled U3 and (correctly)installed the base version of Portable Apps, and every time it's insertted, Vista has a fit and needs to find a driver for it. When I take it with me to school, the XP Pro computers there run it flawlessly. Is (or has) anyone else had this problem, or does someone have a solution for me?

Some U3 drives won't work right on Vista even after you uninstall U3. You could try reinstalling, updating to the latest firmware and then uninstalling again. The U3 uninstaller is flakey in general (numerous reports of lost data and fried drives) but even flakier with older firmware.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Yeah.....kinda late for that. I uninstalled U3 the second I read it wasn't compatible with Vista. Even without any preloaded software, the dumb thing won't work, and Vista won't recognize it without a driver. I was a BIG fan of Windows XP, but I'm regretting buying this laptop with Vista, nothing I have seems compatible!

I have Vista Ultimate, and have had enterprise running since November 2006, and not had any problems that wern't fixed in time. Yeah there will be incompatabilites, that is normal for a new OS, but all problems will be fixed in time.

I run Vista on a computer with a dual-core processor and 2 GB of RAM and it is still slower than Ubuntu running off a DVD in a computer with an AMD Sempron and less than 512 MB of RAM.
Vista itself is pretty, but it doesn't move fast enough.
Moves just fast enough for me, Intel core 2 duo e6400 2GB ram, and I do high end video editing/gaming/and web design work. Faster than my old XP. MY OPINION.
BUT, I will not get into a vista argument, not necessary. All people think different things, I won't be the start of any argument. To many forums i vista are littered with it.

I agree, games and graphics go very well with Vista, but for all the other functions of a computer Ubuntu is better, so I have both. I don't play games on my computers so I only know what others say.
Reinstall U3 and then put PAM on it, well if it is a Sandisk device that is...
And why bother with Vista? All it is, is XP with a few bells and whistles and DRM...
If you loved XP try buying a disc for installing it, if that won;t work try downloading a Linux distro with GParted to delete the Vista partion and then install XP. Or if ya wanna try something new try Ubuntu Linux(if you still wanna keep XP dual-boot, and if you wanna have XP available within Ubuntu try Xen virtualization software!

If you have Beryl, then Ubuntu is superior to Vista (in terms of everything, including graphics), since you can do fancy things that Winblows users will never enjoy! HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 But you are right Windows is (and always be) slower than Ubuntu Linux!

Is there any way I can dual boot Ubuntu and Vista, and still have reliability? I've been pretty intrigued to try out Linux for my University programming classes. It would be nice to stop using Putty to connect to the school Linux account.
You can snag a copy of Innotek's Virtual Box (free virtualization software) and install Ubuntu inside it. It's a handy way to try it out. And Ubuntu is a LiveCD so you can pop it in and boot and try it that way, too.
Dual-booting requires a bit more planning, especially with Vista, since it changed the way the boot setup works. But you can do it. My laptop quad-boots between 2000, XP, Vista and Ubuntu.

...if I run Ubuntu virtually, what kind of performance can I expect? Will is run decently speedy? I have a brand new Dell E1505 with Vista Premium, a Core 2 Duo, 1gig of ram, and a low end (64mb internal, 300mb(?) shared) ATI video card. I think the University's computers here run their Linux virtually, and it can get somewhat boggy at times. I guess I'm not confident enough to try dual-booting with a 2-3 week old computer until I get more experience. So between those suggestions for a virtual "OS booter," which one would be the easiest to use for running Ubuntu?
I really appreciate the help I've received on these forums. It's kinda funny I came here with a flash drive question, and now turned into a full blown Linux questionnaire! (I apologize for that BTW...just interested in something new!)

Thanks for the help guys...I didn't realize that dual booting ubuntu was as easy as running the live cd and partitioning the disk from there........
But before I reliazed that I could simply partion the disc, I thought it would be hard. So if anyone wants 2 dual-boot Winblows with Ubuntu, it is very easy, and since you can partion the hard drive with GParted off of the LiveCD there is no need for those dual-boot guides!

...I found a solution to get even the most stubborn plug-and-play devices to work with Vista, and my once dead (on Vista) flash drive now works. When prompted to get the disk that came with the device, click the option to search your computer. Then go into the OS portion of the hard drive, and find the System32 folder. Windows will keep saying that the device hasn't been installed correctly, but keep on bringing it to that folder, and after about 2-3 times, the given device should work. I hope this helps someone!
