Can this be done, so applications can be opened in sequence, without the menu going into the background, please.

There isn't a modifier key, but there is a setting in Options within the Advanced tab to "Keep menu visible after starting apps". If you routinely want to start multiple apps, this will keep the menu up until you dismiss it by clicking on the taskbar icon, the system tray icon, or the hotkey (default is CTRL-ALT-SPACE).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
And if you want the apps to be launched with the platform, you can check "Start Automatically" in the context menu with each app.
