I have a 4GB micro vault flash drive from Sony and it has a built-in software called VirtualExpander. This basically compresses the files which would practically double the capacity of the flash drive.
For those using flash drives with smaller capacities, a similar software could be very useful.

VirtualExpander for USB Flash Drive
Software like this is the equivalent of the old DoubleSpace or DriveSpace in the old DOS world. It increases the risk of drive corruption. I don't think it works on systems without admin rights. And there's no open source software for Windows that accomplishes this at all.
Basically, you're far better off spending the 10 bucks and buying a bigger drive.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
