Google Chrome Portable no longer can substitute Edge

Hello, been a long-time user of portable apps, kudos for the great website. I accidentally clicked on the Make default browser pop-up in Edge and that messed up the previously default Google Chrome portable. I went through two threads dealing with that but besides changing the Google Chrome to Google Chrome Portable entry in the Windows 10 settings, nothing else happened. Upon attempting to make Chrome the default browser in its settings, nothing happens. Upon trying the same in the Windows settings, also nothing happens. What is this new skulduggery and is there a way around it? Thanks in advance.

Chromium's bug

Looks like a bug in Chrome and (some) other Chromium based browsers. I've noticed the same behavior with Chrome and also Iron.
Just try time regression, by restoring your OS to an older date, maybe..

Thanks for the reply. It's

Thanks for the reply. It's good to learn that's not an isolated issue. However it seems like quite the overkill to restore the OS over that, I could live with it while the bug gets fixed eventually. It was very sneaky of Edge to show that popup, though.

I just wanted to add..

You're welcome!

  • Almost (or maybe) all browsers pop up that way.
  • The Portable Chrome you're using, and all other portable apps can't (theoretically) be set as default apps, they create other local clones that your OS will use parallelly.
  • Editing the registry may solve the problem, if you find a way to do it properly.

Plot twist - what I had

Plot twist - what I had thought to have been Edge was actually the bare-bones Chrome from the portable directory without all its customizations. Turns out the settings choice had worked but defaulted back to the bare-bones chrome instead of the normal one. Issue resolved.
