Going Completely Open-Source

Ok, I decided the other day to go completely open source, so much so, that I replaced my local install of MS Office 2003, with OpenOffice.org, and even Photoshop with GIMP.

I do have a couple of questions though.

I replaced Windows Live Messenger with Gaim IM, except every time it try to log me in, it says Gaim.exe has encountered an error and needs to close, this is right when it says getting cookie at sign in. I tried deleteing and uninstalling GTK, and Gaim, and doing fresh downloads and installs, no help. I also tried using the PortableVersion of gaim from my flash drive on my computer by copying the Gaim folder and the GTK folder, replacing the existing ones. But still no luck. Anyone know what it is? It works fine from my flash.-Fixed that one, thanks Chris for reccomending to upgrade to beta

As well, I wanna get rid of all the MS software, like IE, WMP, and MSN, but everytime I delete the folder (since I can't uninstall) is just replaces everything within a couple seconds. I wanna save some space on my comp, as I don't have much. Does anyone know what I should do to get rid of them?

Oh and, what's the best video and movie player, in your opinion? An open-source one of course.

Thanks very much.

gaim

now, remember that it's been a while since I've used gaim (I tend to get addicted to that kind of stuff), but I seem to remember an issue with that. If I remember correctly, it was a known bug and upgrading to the beta version helped. But don't just go and upgrade. read up on gaim's page. If it's the same bug you're talking about, they already know about it and they have some suggestions on how to fix it.

as for getting rid of IE, etc., the only thing I can suggest is this:

http://www.gentoo.org

Wink Wink

seriously, I'm not sure if you can get rid of them. I'd try Control Panel --> Add/remove Windows Components, and see if they're there, but if that doesn't work, I dunno what to tell you.

not to get OT, but I know about Gentoo. I was joking. I've heard gentoo referred to as linux for control freaks. I dig it. Lots of other people don't. No biggie.

and, HSP, no problem about the tip. I remember it was really frustrating until I figured it out.

You can't get rid of IE

IE and the Windows Explorer are, if not the same, at least siamese twins. This even motivated a monopoly trial from Netscape against Microsoft.
As examples of how closely integrated they are: You're bound to have an Explorer.exe task running. Kill it and the task bar is gone. (Careful, lad! You might need to restart Windows after that!). Otherwise, try typing a URL (http://.... ) in the address bar of the Windows Explorer and you will see a fascinating mutation happen. So IE is Explorer, and Explorer is Windows. http://www.ubuntu.com. Smile

You can remove

You can remove IE.
http://www.nliteos.com/

Kill it and the task bar is gone.(Careful, lad! You might need to restart Windows after that!)
Shut Windows down and your computer is off.(Careful, lad! You might need to restart it after such trial!)

I thought I remembered a program you could buy that allowed you to remove those sort of things in Windows 98 called 98lite. had a little search and it seems they have one for 2000/XP now too:

http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html

Also they have a free trial type version too:
http://www.litepc.com/xptrial_lic.html

Also on the subject of removing IE, if you don't actually use the Windows Explorer file manager, and your using open source stuff that does hook IE as a web preview and crap, you can actually remove it with that software. Not sure if it damages the explorer shell though...if it did you'd have to use an open source one Smile

So I guess you could try the trial version (I think you might be able to use it indefinitely too, just with less features) and if you like it I think it costs $40 USD.

EDIT: WOOPS! just realised these killed the point of going open source (being payware themselves). Sorry for that Sad

I would recommend xplorer2

I would recommend xplorer2 for an exploring program. I find that VLC is really good, but that's just my opinion.

To get some ideas for other

To get some ideas for other software, go to the sourceforge page, be sure to use the filters to only get windows compatible apps though. If you don't use the filter you may get 400 results when only 30 are actually windows compatible

HSP,

I thought you loved Ubuntu. Why not just kill Winblows?

As all of ya should know Microsoft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or Free BSD on yer Windows comp.

There's probably not enough

There's probably not enough software for Linux that he could run his PC the same way he used to.

Have you used Linux? There

Have you used Linux?

There are around 18200 packages available, just for Debian based distributions - and that's only the "officially supported" section...

There's a few reasons.

That being one of them. Another is PortableApps! Biggrin But I will eventually get a new laptop with dual boot Ubunutu and Windows, and that way it won't be running in a virtual machine.

DON'T

Remove WMP or IE.

Too many windows attachments. This is how registry and fatal errors occur.

You can minimize their presence on your PC in many ways.

Ok. Thanks.

To "Minimize" their presence, what ideas do you have?

1st.

Associate all your media files with another (VLC etc.) Right click>Opens with

I don't know if there is a place in Win XP that you can mass associate files or not. I will do some research for you.

Ok. Thanks.

I had already done most of that. Umm, do you know how come I can't delete WMP? Like, why won't Windows let me? I understand how it needs IE, but why WMP?

Part of XP?

I believe that starting with 2000 or maybe ME WMP became part of XP. The whole "media center" thing.

EDIT: You might also be interested in a program that I found that is portable.

StartupLite: http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php
It tells you what programs/processes start up on your computer. I have seen this info in other programs, but this one is very light. Only 192kb and it leaves no reg entries.

As far as I can see, you can

As far as I can see, you can delete WMP. Just go to control panel and it should be in there. Not that it will let you do anything, but that was just from an obvious observation.
