Does a portable version of Hotsync for Palm handhelds exist ? Or is anyone working on it ?

I haven't seen anything of the kind, but I would be very interested in it if anyone managed to do it.
And it would be great if somebody managed to get Acrobat Reader for PalmOS and Documents To Go to work portably too.
The topic was probably locked/ Most of the topics that are over 3 months old were accidentally locked a short time ago.
I am pretty sure Palm HotSync is not OpenSource. There may be some open source alternatives out there though.

...I have not been able to get it to work, nor have I found a "How To..." for it.
I did read quite a bit of the Palm OS (Then I found UMPC's much cooler). There is a way to sync with the internet, you know. Why do you need to have a portable one, though. Backup? Use the info on the PC? There are different portable solutions for different reasons.

The most important thing about having a portable Palm Desktop would be having a full blown keyboard where to enter contacts, appointments, etc. then sync them to the Palm, and go away with all the new info in your pocket.
Backing up frequently is also most desirable, but secondary, since you'd be backing up to a very easy to lose device.
Why not just use a keyboard attachment? Or backup into an SD card?

I've tried keyboards. But they are not configurable for different locales. I touchtype, so I don't care about the drawings on the keys. I just want an "ñ" to appear every time I put down my right pinky, not a ";". So I just set up computers to use a Spanish keyboard, and type á, é, í, ó, and ú just about as fast as any other char. But you can't do that with those fold away keyboards...
Besides, a larger screen also helps. Not to mention copy-paste from the web-site you are seeing to your address book...
Oh! And I can't back-up to my SD. It's too full with PortableApps!

There is a 3rd party driver available that supports most Palm keyboards - I use it with my Logitech one - that is more stable, smaller, and faster than the OEM ones, and also has full layout support, including user-customisable keymaps

don't have palm, I have PocketPC but I have been reading this thread and I think you should check here and here... it's solutions to sync Palm with thunderbird and I think it can be used with PThunderbird... I have extensions to sync my Nokia and my Sony Ericsson cellphones with PThunderbird and both work very well so maybe you can sync with Palm in a portable way... don't know
At least to sync contacts that is the most important stuff that everyone wants to keep up to date...
EDIT: I found this post on Thunderbird forums... Palm Sync for mail already works on Thunderbird via MAPI, just setup the Palm conduit as you would for Netscape 4.x. I've been using it for a long time, no problem. I believe PocketPC's ActiveSync also uses MAPI so it should be configurable. --Raccettura 15:55, 23 September 2006 (PDT)

then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
First off, thanks for the research, but, all of the current software to sync palms with tbird are beta at best for tbird 2.x.x.x, and have a tendency to create new copies of all your data on your palm with every sync until it fills up and dies.
Also, none of them, whatsoever, deal with syncing the palm calendar with tbird (well, lightning / sunbird) since this one can't be done (yet).
But the question in this thread actually relates to how to portableize The Palm Desktop software, which is the actual USB device handlers and proprietary comms / sync code that runs on the machine that your PDA cradle is attached to. There's no real way that it is ever going to happen, since it is closed source, commercial, requires admin rights to install (drivers), and probably many other reasons.
So, even if you could get the existing stuff working for the address book, you would still be tied to syncing your portable tbird data with your palm only on your home PC.
now that you say it I remember something... I don't know on palm but at least on PocketPC, the devide need to know which computer it's attached... and it only can be attached to two computers, once you try a third it delete the relationship with a previous one... this is "uncomfortable" for "portabilization"...
