I use 2 portable USB 2.0 Notebook (2.5) Hard Drives, I don't know if it is the computer itself which came with Windows Vista, but when I run larger portable apps such as Firefox, the drives freeze up (steady red light on the case). I am also having trouble copying large folders. Anyone else have this issue with Vista?
As I abhor Vista I do not have the link ready off the top of my head. Vista and large files is a known issue. There is a patch available if you search for vista and large file copy you can find it. I personally will remain on XP until i can no longer be on there and then I will go to ubuntu or the successor of Vista.

Both drives needed to be plugged into an outlet for extra power, cost me close to $50, but well worth it.
You're right, got to watch the big files and don't get greedy and close the Windows Explorer window or it's Restart time.
