Does anyone know of a portable astronomy program?
Or which one would you like to have portabalised?
Any thoughts/hints/ideas welcome.

Probably Stellarium would be my choice.

Stellarium renders 3D photo-realistic skies in real time with OpenGL. It displays stars, constellations, planets, nebulas and others things like ground, landscape, atmosphere, etc.
I was looking at it before and don't quote me on it but I think it was fairly straight forward. I may have what I was working on somewhere on my pc.

Stellarium 0.9.0 has been released. I believe it uses an ini file in the user profile. I will check over the weekend.

That would be fantastic as a portable app!

Not necessarily as portable as we would expect from things hosted on portableapps.com, but with a little tinkering (extracting files from installer, see link above) it becomes portable enough for most people. Worked for me!

Seems to be a very nice program.

Just now, I saw on tanisthalon's site that he's working on Stellarium.
I believe that's the one it says. I dunno, check into it yourself, I just wanted to let you know, so there's not two people working on the same app. Unless you want of course.

Stellarium is very easy to make portable.
Just put all of it into a folder and thats it.
It looks for its data in the same folder the exe is so the only hard thing to do is to make it paf-compliant. They are working on a new version (to be released in June) and redoing the handling of the data files and maybe adding a parameter to specify the data folder so I was waiting for the new release to get started.
But as I have lots of other stuff to do right now, maybe I wait for Tanisthalons version as I'm better at testing than starting from scratch.

the sky isnt open source, or free, but it is portable. you just have to set the directories manually.
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
Celestia too is real great program you can find it :
