Convey Portable .98b Release

Convey Portable v0.98b Portable Send To Manager

I created this little app to run when I insert my USB Drive. It basically takes a subfolder of application shortcuts on your portable drive and adds them to the current computer's Send To folder. For instance, if you like opening pdf files with Portable Sumatra instead of the Acrobat that is installed on the computer you're plugged into, you can just right-click the pdf file and choose Send To > Sumatra PDF Portable.

The best thing is that it changes the shortcuts' parameters on the host computer so that they point to the USB drive's current drive letter.

Finally, it monitors the the portable drive so that when you remove it, it will automatically delete the shortcuts it created in the computer's Send To folder. In short, it cleans up after itself.

Lots of customization options and now Addons!!

Download it here

Just install to apps folder on drive and then run the ConveyPortable.exe. It will create the shortcuts folder and you can start adding new shortcuts. Then, use the tray icon to control.

Am I the first?

Am I going to be the first to say that this is better than ever?!!! Smile

Those addons rock!!!

The only oddity I have noticed till now is that the command addon fails (i.e: opens a prompt in the add on command instead of where it is supposed to open) if I right click anything on drive B: (which is of course, a USB drive that has been subst'ed with "subst.exe B: \" while standing anywhere in the USB drive).

Where can I find the source for the add ons?
Have you written anything on how they interact with/are interacted by The Conveyor?
Is it some command line switch that makes them show their config instead of doing their thing? I might be interested in writing one or two of my own.

Thanks...

I've fixed the look into the Command Addon. I think I can recreate it.

Added the Addons' source code to the Addons page of the website.

The Addons are basically standalone little programs. You send a parameter (command-line switch) for different functions. e.g. RunAddon.exe -config or RunAddon.exe -enable. Each one of these trigger a different subroutine. This way the Addons sort of take care of themselves.

-edit-
The Command Addon is fixed.

The only clickable links on the page are the little symbols next to each addon name to download the addon itself

Works like a charm!

The command add on now works OK.

Thanks for the sources and the info. I only wish you were using a more standard programming language! Smile

I found another little quirk: the product name resource is empty, so in PAM it shows up as a blank entry. Just the icon, no text.

Ahah.

I laughed when I saw a random little icon in my menu. Blum

Product Name

Regarding the programming language, I too sometimes wish I was using something more standard. Smile

The product name should be fixed now. Thanks.

Omg.

Like. I have to say. And I've never said this before, so let's see what the consequences are. Blum Your app, is ****ing amazing. That's right, it's ducking amazing. As amazing as ducks.

Two small suggestions. Once I ran the installer, the folder it created was "Convey Portable_Setup" Or something like that. Maybe it was just me, but if not, maybe make it just Convey Portable. Number two in the settings menu, once you click apply, the buttons stays active, so maybe, for a later release, if it's not too ard, once apply it click, make it become inactive until new settings are changed, so people no the settings have been applied.

And again, everthing is so wonderful, your site, help file, or and the program.

Still haven't even tried the add-ons, that's how happy I am so far. Smile

THANK YOU!

changed

The install folder is now Convey Portable.

I will try to deactivate the buttons for the next release. At the very least I will popup a message saying "Settings Applied". Good idea.

Also someone here typed a D instead of an F somewhere but I can't remember where. Smile

What changes do I need to

What changes do I need to make to the clamwin shortcut so it scans a single file or folder when in the links folder?

I put this request in the ClamWin thread too

Shortcut Link

You should use clamscan for that. It is a couple folders deeper in the ClamWin Portable folder.

Make a shortcut from clamscan.exe to the links folder and add these options to the end of the shortcut target (after the quote):

-d "..\..\..\Data\db" -r --bell

Mine looks like this:

"M:\ClamWinPortable\App\clamwin\bin\clamscan.exe" -d "..\..\..\Data\db" -r --bell

The options used are
-d database location
-r recurse folders
--bell sound bell if virus found

Would that make it

Would that make it non-portable, since you bypass the launcher?

No, it wouldn't

Convey will change the drive letter (M:) to the appropriate letter when it starts, and the data will be stored three dirs above where clamscan.exe is (..\..\..) in the Data dir (i.e.: within the USB drive and in the same place where Clan saves its info).

Thanks that seems to work

If it finds a virus does the command window stay open with the reslt or can you only rely on the bell sound? (My PC at work has no sound card...)

while we're on the subject...

Here is how to send a file as an attachment in ThunderbirdPortable (checked in 2.0).

After the quote in the Target box of your Thunderbird portable shortcut paste this:

-compose attachment=

mine looks like this:

"M:\Portable Apps\ThunderbirdPortable\ThunderbirdPortable.exe" -compose attachment=

I'll try it again

I had already tried that one (but I'm still using 1.5.xxxx).
What happened was that I would get the compose window, with the file "allegedly" attached, but when I sent the mail, it would arrive without the attached file...
Perhaps I had done something wrong... I'll try it again tomorrow.

Looks good, but doesn't work

Thanks for the Syntax Smile Would be great to get it working, but at the moment I've got the same prob like Wences wrote: A new "Compose" windows opens and the file is attached, but when receiving that mail the attachment is missing.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance!

Bug?

FYI,
When I look for my copy of Convey .98b in PAM, it appears as the first item in the menu with just the Convey icon (no text next to it). Even if I 'refresh App Icons' in the Options menu, the name does not appear. This doesn't seem to be affecting the way Convey works.

Already addressed

Are you using the very latest release?
That issue has already been addressed, so just downloading again should fix it.

I love this app! I would love to include it in the Armogohma Suites, (thread in beta forums).

Strange kind of problem I

Strange kind of problem I just had.

I got a new 4gb usb drive, and just copied over my entire portable apps folder from my 2gb usb drive. Figured it would work.

It can't find some of the links, though. It is strange - some of them, it looks like it can find, even though the actual link property points to the other drive (even though I don't have it in the usb port).

I just went through and changed the drive letter to the "current" one, but now I'm wondering if I didn't do something wrong initially. I just select the app on the usb drive, and send it to the Convey menu item in the sendto menu.

Is there another way I'm supposed to do it?

Figured it out (sorta)

I checked my SendTo folder in documents and settings, and there were some remnant links to the old drive letter. If convey finds an existing instance of a link, it does not over-write it? Could that be made an option? Particularly since you can have it save the "current" links to a different folder, why not let the user over-write?

Thanks - I love this app. Smile

no

If convey finds an existing instance of a link, just rename your own links (in my case P-VLC, P-Foxit Reader, etc).

I agree with you, convey should temporarily replace the existing ones...

At least in my Office and Home PCs I use to check (more or less once in a week) to remove those lost links that convey left behind...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

I love Convey... but

I love Convey... but according to ProcessExplorer it's reading from the USB about every 15 seconds. Not much, but enough to slow the drive down significantly.

I never noticed this before... Has anyone heard of this, or have any idea what might be going on?

EDIT: I've tried multiple installs. Once I got it to stop reading constantly when I un-checked "Show empty folder popup"... But now whenever I try to un-check that box, it won't save. Next time I go to settings the "Show empty folder popup" is checked and ConveyPortable is reading 4 times a minute from the source. This is from several sources and on several computers. WTH?

Wonderful app, even for

Wonderful app, even for non-portable applications. If I'd rather copy my basic apps from a backup disk to the desktop computer instead of having to install everything separately and tweak OOo settings, I can do that, now with the right-clickable settings I like.

Something to consider...

If you could have Convey totally replace the "right-click" menu, that would totally rock! I already use it for moving/copying files, so a total takeover of the "Right-Click Menu" would make the PA Suite a "God-mode" tool, if you will? Yea, Nay, anyone else agree?

At first I was going to lecture you about bumping up a year old thread but, hey, that's actually a good idea Smile

I could have the entire right click context menu be replaced Biggrin
Only problem is I don't know how to do that completely >_
