Audio software for crappy sound cards

Does anyone know of an audio software that can record whatever is playing through the system mixer even if you cant choose to record through the stereo and or other mixer?

Usually audacity is the perfect app but it fails in this respect because i dont have the choice of the stereo. any one have pointers?
