Possible bug in Portable Firefox 2.0.0.4 concerning links in RSS feeds

I download podcasts from the BBC website by going to the RSS feed and clicking "Save Link As...". After I recently upgraded from Portable Firefox 2.0.0.3 to 2.0.0.4, I noticed that I was no longer able to do this as the entries no longer showed up as links in the RSS feed. I downloaded fresh copies of Portable Firefox 2.0.0.3 and 2.0.0.4 and installed them on a spare USB drive, and the links worked fine in 2.0.0.3 but not in 2.0.0.4.

I initially thought it was a problem with Firefox itself, so I posted a message in the Firefox Bugs forum at MozillaZine: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=555616

As you can see, someone confirmed that they do show up as links in the regular version of Firefox 2.0.0.4, so I am now thinking that perhaps this is a bug that was introduced in Portable Firefox 2.0.0.4.

Any thoughts?

Nope

My local copy of FF 2.0.0.4 shows no clickable links and no ability to right-click and save link as in those feeds.

John,

John,

Could you give an example of a site which does provide clickable links and the ability to right-click and save. I don't usually use RSS. Thanks

Try these

Andre,

Do these links give you the results you expect?

http://external.portableapps.com/feeds/portableapps_list.xml

http://fxfeeds.mozilla.com/rss20.xml
http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_world_edition/front_page/rss.xml

I don't use RSS so I don't know what you expect to see.
I see clickable links.

Actually it looks like I do use RSS as the above links load in my bookmarks in the background !!! Anyone know how I can turn this OFF when I'm on a modem???

Issue only seems to affect RSS feeds offering downloads

Tim,

Yes, all those RSS feeds do have clickable links. It seems that the issue only affects RSS feeds offering downloads such as podcasts (audio or video). For example, it seems that all of the RSS feeds for the BBC's podcasts (http://www.bbc.co.uk/newspodcasts) are affected (here's just a few as my previous comments got marked as potential spam):

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/downloadtrial/bbc1/tenoclocknews/rss.xml
http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/downloadtrial/news24/storyfix/rss.xml
http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/downloadtrial/radio4/today/rss.xml

And about your question, I think it may be a Live Bookmark that you're talking about. If you don't want it to load, you can just right click and Delete.

Andrew

No Links

I see no links for any of them using either my local copy of Firefox or my Firefox Portable installation. Both 2.0.0.4. Mozilla may have changed the RSS preview... (remember that's just a preview of the RSS feed, it's not supposed to be really that functional).

So, it is not a Firefox Portable issue. This is the way Firefox 2.0.0.4 works.

BBC's problem after all

Thanks for all your help; it seems like it *is* the BBC's problem after all. I was looking at the bugs on BugZilla, and I came across number 373546. It seems like the BBC has implemented the RSS 2 spec incorrectly and Firefox (previous to 2.0.0.4) was recognizing as links things which shouldn't be links (according to the spec). I've emailed the BBC to tell them about the problem.
