Autoupdated and all data gone!

My copy of Thunderbird autoupdated to 2.0.0.4 and I chose to install the update after starting the next time. Well when I opened Thunderbird again, it installed the update and all data appears to be gone. Now I have a backup at home, but I am at work now. I downloaded a new copy and put it on a new thumbdrive and attempted to copy over my data file, which looks to still have all my info in it, but I get an error message that prefs.js is corrupted and connot be copied, which ends the process altogether. Is it possible to recover my seemingly lost data? Also my theme no longer works either. I use the littlebird theme for both firefox and thunderbird.

TIA for any help!

Thunderbird 2.*

isn't officially supported and thus not ready for every-day use.
But...
In my copy, there are 4 prefs.js. Try using one of the backup-ed ones.

Well, I basically resotred

Well, I basically resotred my backup copy of Thunderbird and all is back to normal, but it again prompted me to update, but this time I snuck in b4 it realized it and set it to ask before updating. I just won't look to upgrade right now.

EDIT: BTW, the copy that works is 2.0.0.0 (20070326).

In Thunderbird Portable,

In Thunderbird Portable, Under Tools > Options > Update tab

Uncheck the Thunderbird option.

Do this in Firefox Portable too.

When PortableApps.com releases new versions, just use them to update your apps. You may have to do the above procedure after application update.

Perhaps John T. Haller should disable the auto update in all Mozilla and all other applications, where this type of issue is possible between portable and non-portable versions of apps.

Sound advice.

I will do this going forward, seems like a quality plan.

Thanks

I was just about to do the auto update and am very glad I didn't. Thanks for the fix for the annoying update pop up. This should be added to the support page itself; don't use thunderbird /firefox auto update when using portable apps. Biggrin

You have it all wrong.

You have it all wrong. Autoupdate is fine as long as files aren't corrupted. Tips for keeping a flash drive reliable and making ti live longer are scattered throughout the forums, and I'm pretty sure John has some stuff on the main area of the site.

Keep Extra Copies of FF and TB

At least of TB because without mail, mine runs just under 50 MB and actually would be less if I didn't have so many themes. I keep copies of both programs (FF and TB) folders and just have "(Backup)" so if there is any corruption, I can just make another copy of the Backup and toss the whole corrupted program. I still use my Mail out of the (Drive)://Netscape/Users/Arizona480/Mail directory, so any copies I run know to use that folder. I've never had my Mail files go bad, but I always leave messages on the servers until I back those files up.
