Hi!
Wondering if Palm Desktop can be used with portable apps. I'd love to be able to take my Palm stuff and use it at work, but the IT guys won't let me install it on the work computers as it's not company equipment. I have a Treo 650 I'd like to use for scheduling etc both at work and at home.
Thanks for any advice!

While Palm Desktop is available for free, it isn't Open Source. So, you are not likely to get a portable version here. I understand the desire for a solution that doesn't require a work machine install, I've been using a PalmOS pda since they were called US Robotics!
One possible solution you may want to investigate, if you like playing with software. I'm experimenting with an external USB drive with linux installed. There are several Linux-based Palm Desktop-like solutions, the one I use on my home box is called 'jpilot'. Still experimenting (very early stage, no sync yet).
Another possibility in approaching your work IT department is to see if they support synch software to some other, 'authorized', PIM-like software (e.g., Outlook, Notes, Chaos32). It is possible to synch a PalmOS device to multiple desktop applications.
Two Portable Versions, I let you test it while I do it also with my Palm IIIxe

I believed the best workaround is to install portable VirtualBox and install XP with Palm Desktop. In another post there is instruction to install portable-VirtualBox.
As Sun Virtual Box support USB connection you can sync with the Palm Desktop.
Hope this helps.

try search a Thunderbird extension? I found one for my Nokia cellphone and another one to my Sony Ericsson cellphone, and I use them portably syncing with my PTB... maybe there is one for PALM.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
I know of the Nokia extension, but it is the first time I hear of a Sony Ericsson one, I would need it so I've been looking for it, but on the thunderbird Extension page, I just can't find it.
Let me know if you can help.
Thanks a lot

whit My Phone Explorer, it is not in the Thunderbird extensions webpage. It have one "contra"... when you update your extensions, the updater stops on this extesion and don't update the rest under it, you have to do it by yourself.
BTW, MyPhoneExplorer is not portable... yet...
EDIT: Plus, I think it's freeware, not Open Source...

Thank you so much!
Will it work with W910I?

you should read the website documents...
At least I use it on my K790a and it works very well (I have to note that my original intention was to use it on a Nokia phone... lol)
BTW, is there anybody who wants to build a launcher for this program?

thanks a lot, it does work with 910i...... but how do you synch your thunderbird; thunderbird portable, Palm desktop or Sunbird with it?

your portable thunderbird open before opening myphoneexplorer, go to the options and you'll see it as an option to sync.

Aciago, you are the man! This software is THE thing for Sony-Ericsson phones...
However, I still don't get to do what I want: Thunderbird and lightning are detected but it does not detect Palm desktop, and even more surprisingly, does not detect Sunbird (which I thought was the same as lightning...)
What can I do?

thank you...
I think that if Palm Desktop and Sunbird are not detected you should write to the developer to point it so maybe it can be included in the next release.
I only use it with my portable thunderbird so I don't know for sure in the rest of Apps.
(In the same letter can you ask the developer to release a portable usb version?)

Yes I will, I owe you that
Still can't understand how Lightning and Sunbird that are supposed to be identical can be treated differently by this soft...

Maybe I have been a little too enthusiastic about this software: It messed upmy thunderbird display (all the mails are preceded by extra long display that hides the text's body, plus it has some unexpected results with lightning).
Still seems popular and to work for many, but use at your own risks.

I never had that issue, and I use it at least once a week since a year ago...

Try, in TBird, going to the View menu, down to Headers, and make sure that it is set to Normal, not All.
I checked at the time, it was normal, even with overwriting Portable TB with backup, only way to get away with it was erase TB that had been processed by Phonesync and then install the backup.

one possible solution you might try is to download the palm desktop software, and then with the installer itself, use either innounp or universal extractor to extract the program from the installer, then copy the extracted program to your usb or whatever. This may or may not work, as it has not always worked when I've tried it. also, the palm desktop software, when it starts like this, may try to write to the registry. i don't know if this will be a problem or not, and i don't know if you will still be able to sync using this method, but if all else fails, it's worth a shot, i suppose. as for where to find innounp or universal extractor, just search for them on Google, need any more help, give me a shout on here, i will know if you reply to this.
Try using Portable Apps Creator (PAC). https://portableapps.com/node/9909 It is in its beta form, and it will not work on all apps, but from the sounds of it, it works pretty well for most apps.

Has anyone had any progress with this? If this is a NoCanDo issue, is it possible to have a portable app that can read the .pdb (palm database) files? I use PortableApps with the 8GB SD card within my Treo 680. I use the Palm app CardReader (turns the PDA into USB card reader) to access the SD card. VERY handy.
