U3 offers a program called wallpaper swapper. It loads bmp files as wallpaper as long as your U3 is plugged in. Is there a way to do this with portable apps?

and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
And this one's been posted A LOT. I think maybe even on the page this one is posted on, or the one before.

Currently this is not a feature of the PAM.
It looks like it will be in the future.
A search for the subject "wallpaper" would have provided you a mess of results concerning among other things non-official pam versions which might attempt this and other non PAM programs.
The best info I think after sorting thru the mess is:
https://portableapps.com/node/6085
Which indicates that it is something John is working on
I wish people who say "search" would search and ask themselves, would these results really have helped a "newbie".

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
And it helps me... if I can remove the mess, why another normal person like me can't?
BTW, I'm also a newbie...

Please read the sticky at the top of the general forum. The ASCII art has gotten WAY out of hand and is impacting the readability and usefulness of several threads.

Remember,
Even with hands Mr Bunny will achieve world domination thru his sheer cuteness alone. Therefore you must never use him in posts where you are being harsh or unhelpful.
If you use him in posts where you are harsh or unhelpful he will become associated with harshness and unhelpfulness. You will also reflect poorly on other people who use the BunnySig.
So, when you post, ask this question,
"Would Mr Bunny do this?"
If the answer is No, you should not use the BunnySig.
Of course if the answer is No you probably shouldn't be making the post in the first place, but none of us is perfect.

You'll find a mod of the PortableApps Menu with a wallpaper swapper.
Just search.

It's kinda scary when my desktop is messier than my room...
I searched which directed me to posts concerning Mod versions... and I was still confused. I want to use the official PAM and see that John hasn't created the wallpaper feature yet.
Also, i just uninstalled the U3 software that came on my Flash drive that I purchased yesterday. There's just no need for those pesky "Trial version" programs.
You have to get a little tricksy if you want to use the stock PAM with a wallpaper switcher. Search on this site for LaunchFromPort, install it, install PAM, remove PStart from LaunchFromPort, rename PortableAppsMenu.exe to PStart.exe and then copy over to the LaunchFromPort folder.
NOTE: it may or may not work. It definitely works with PStart. It doesn't work with ASuite. I seem to remember seeing that it works with PAM, but I'm not sure.
Lemme know if you need help making the necessary modifications; you need to know a little bit of what you're doing.
By the way, for your future reference, we get a lot of people asking for help with stuff that we answered a zillion times (or for inane stuff like 'omg 1337 m$ ofis protbl hax0r??!?!'), so we're a little sensitized to that. if you want to avoid the 'rtfm effect', tell people that you want to switch wallpapers, you found a wallpaper switcher, and you use PAM, and how do you make PAM and the switcher work together.

I did as you said. I installed LaunchFromPort onto my Flash drive. Then when I tried to install PAM onto my drive, there were certain files (such as autostart) that would have to replace the files from LaunchFromPort. Am I supposed to replace these files? I did, and then when I tried to run LaunchFromPort, the new desktop flashed on the screen for a second and then vanished. I'm confused! I don't know where I should install the files and which ones to replace. Are there any suggestions or detailed instructions?
I deleted everything off my drive, but when I plug it into the computer, my drive is being displyed as PortableApps. How is this possible?! I thought i deleted everything off of the drive.
EDIT: Okay, I fixed this by formatting the drive. I'm pretty new to this...what exactly happened? If I deleted everything off of the drive, why did I need to format it to get it to display its default icon instead of the portable apps icon?
hidden autorun.inf file put in root directory by PAM install.

there is a hidden autorun.inf file in the root of your flash drive where this information is stored. If you had gone to your folder options and unselected "Do not show hidden files" you would have seen it and would be able to delete it without having to format your drive.

Thank you! Didn't know that.
Can anyone offer some additional help for a newbie trying to integrate PAM and LaunchFromPort?
EDIT: Also, just so that I have a better understanding of portable storage, why can I never get the drive to be completely free? there is 4 KB being used by default.
I've had that before. I think in the autorun.inf, the drive gets renamed PortableApps. You should be able to just rename it by right-clicking the drive icon and clicking rename. Reformatting works too...
About the wallpaper switcher, I tried to do it so I could give you clear instructions and it turns out that LFP doesn't work with PAM. I'd do one of two things. Either use that PAM mod, or don't use a wallpaper switcher. I've used the PAM mod and it's good. I prefer ASuite, but the PAM mod is good.
Otherwise, don't use the wallpaper switcher until the new PAM comes out. I used to use LFP and I quit using it because the two main places where I use it are school and work. at school, they've disabled desktop backgrounds and at work, my boss would think I'm screwing around with his equipment and he wouldn't understand that I haven't changed anything permanently. My point is, unless you're using your stick in a place where they don't care what the desktop background is, you may be asking for trouble switching it around.
sorry I kind of led you on a bit of a wild goose chase there. I thought I'd heard that someone else had gotten it to work.

No Problem...I just thought I was going crazy!
By the way, is The Prtable MOD just as good as PAM? Is it made by the same people? And is everything secure (meaning truly portable and not leaving traces behind on the host PC)?
I can't tell you about the security; I'd imagine it's just as good as the original, but you might want to check that with someone else who knows better than I do.
I might add that apparently using JPGs with many wallpaper switchers leaves stuff behind on the host computer.
The mod is made by some members of this site. From what I gather, they just added some stuff to John's original PAM. As I said, it seems to work fine, plus it has some nice features like application hiding (useful when an application like XAMPP or OpenOffice has about ten executables to choose from and you only want one to appear in the PAM). If I were a PAM user, I'd use the mod, but I prefer PStart (what I used to use) and ASuite (what I use now).
Search around for the PAM-mod forum topic. They'll discuss security and features more on that topic.

well, now my Flash drive isn't working. That's right - I plug it in and it says USB device not recognized. I tried it on 3 different computers and all say the same thing so it's not a driver issue or anything. What a pain! i think I'm cursed.
The drive that just stopped is the SanDisk 4.0 GB Micro Cruzer. Had it for only 2 days and already a problem. my old device - the Lexar 256 MB Jumpdrive has worked problem free for 2+ years! This royally blows.
Sometimes computers don't like a certain type of formating that you can do. Also, Do you always carry it in your pocket because if so you may have bumped it and broken something internally. I have a 2gig SanDisk Cruzer Micro and it works great. The only other problem I can think of is that you have a defect. Try SanDisk Support.

No. There are no moving parts. It's virtually impossible to break a flash drive without effort. Flash drives are extremely resistant to pressure. It could handle being run over by a bus.
Vintage!
I doubt it could be run over by a bus. However I have lied down on one of my old flashdrives before and cracked it pretty bad.

Maybe the older models were more fragile. Also, it is easier to snap one in half (requires precision, which is absent in most accidents) than to crush one or knock something loose. Nothing inside moves, so there is virtually no chance of knocking anything loose. Something small with lots of pressure applied going into the middle (but not the ends), and weight on both ends (but not in the middle) going the other way is the optimum situation for destruction. You must've had this situation (maybe a part of your body put pressure on the middle but not the ends). It would survive a bus because there is even weight distribution. It's like trying to crush a piece of paper on concrete.
Try taking the four fingers on one hand and use them to apply pressure to your sternum. Make sure to apply plenty of pressure. Now push with only one finger (you can simply remove the other three fingers). Remember too, that the ends of a flash drive are solid, and the middle is hollow.
I can give you other demonstrations if you want.

However out of curiosity (yes I know it killed the cat) are you a designer?

I don't have the patience to program. Don't confuse technical savvy with programming skill. Neither requires the other, though each helps the other (and programmers tend to have tech savvy).
