defrag application
defraging is not recomended for usb drives it would be safer and easier just to delete files. i defrag only after severe performance decreases
scandisk? that was for win9x now its chkdsk whats wrong with it? it works?

i don't want to defrag or scandsik the usb drive but use those programs on an HD.

There are already a few rescue disks out there that could boot from CD / DVD / USB thumb drive, etc. Google it.
