Hi there
I have been using a portable version of Thunderbird, on partition D for a long time, but because I find no way of making it the default Windows mail program, a feature that I often need, I have installed a local version but having problems with importing the data from the portable version, because it is well over the 2GB, actually around 6GB, with many accounts, too cumbersome to setup anew, etc.
I see instructions for importing data into the portable version, but not the other way round.
- How EXACTLY do I go about this? Exacty which folders do I copy to where on the Windows 11 notebook and would that suffice to get to work on starting TB?
- In trying to make PortableThunderbird the default mail program, in settings, one it seems can only set a program installed in Windows & there is no option for a program that is portable or is there & if so any simple way to do so?
I would appreciate your guidance.
Thanks in advance.

i think, you can select portable app as standard in win and let open wished file types by wished app.
not sure how good it works and if better choose the exe file or the loader.
my knowledge stand.
you could propably set the portable as default without doing it complicated or huge data transfer.

Hi
Thank you for the response.
With Windows 10, what you suggest, selecting a program like Thunderbird Portable was possible, because there was the option of selecting a program located outside the Windows installed programs OR Microsoft Store.
With Windows 11, that option does not appear to be there, at least for mail.
In Apps > Default apps > ... it is possible to set the installed version of Thunderbird as the default program to open "mailto". The only other options available are Firefox, MS Edge and then "Browse apps in Microsoft Apps Store". There is no option of selecting a program on the PC, which could be Thunderbird Portable. That is exactly the problem.
Before Win 11, I never needed any other options. Now because of this missing option, I thought then of installing Thunderbird and import settings from the portable folder.
It happens to be I manage REALLY many mail accounts, among other issues, which would be too cumbersome to set up individually. I have over the many years got the Thunderbird Portable Thunderbird_profile_backup.zip file to accumulate a total of about 5.7GB. If I could easily import this, it would be an alternative. The problem is, Thunderbird suggests above 2GB, that one does it manually. I tried but failed, but because I probably could not get some instructions right.
Exactly WHICH FILES in exactly which FOLDERS in Thunderbird Portable are supposed to be copied where in the installed version?
The first response from Rex suggests using "Portable File Associator" but a short look at the link gave the impression, that is an archaic program no longer used, etc.
Thank you in advance
try find option to connect file type open with tb portable
i think its possible, if cant find the other one
otherwise you sure can find out where to copy mail accounts
one can also find out where tb save settings, but that can be adjusted by hand to prevent breaking all.
you sure can google where the account directories need to be copied.
sorry, cant help more, at moment.
check it out.

Hi

I actually came here for help, not being a coder or pc profi ... because all I have tried, which includes possible solutions found by seraching around online does not help.
Have you tried this below offering, as well?
Register Thunderbird Portable with Default Apps:
https://portableapps.com/node/66713
Please note, however, that this is not a recommendation by me, since I have never used it, or anything similar, I'm merely pointing to it, as a possible solution.
i would say associating file types would also do.
but you can first try my next comment, i heard it works at least for starting tb.
but i kinda dont see the problem as so much solution posted here, for both, using as is, making standard, etc.
maybe misses where to put in installed, but all other is said.
the directory structure of installed can sure be found and put it in or link to your actula data place and delete the rest.
also search...
windows 11 select an app to open this file
bye

mail is not my topic but researched that portable has dir mail and imapmail.
if you search sys particion for mail dir you find both on your system but
placing the from portable there could be not enough and you could mix it with your old data.
as you no pro i would say try only to get tb portable as standard, you know now many ways...
my both links are enough, normally both methods should work same and do it.
once again, better dont try to put data into installed as you may mix with allready mails there.
if cant force standard app then you could associate imf (.imf) with other method, it would open saved mails with portable tb.
i know it worked usually.
not sure you said you need desktop shortcut to portable tb, this could be a workaround, further method.
now you know all methods.
end
