best way simple portable apps update & data and setting migration

mentioned update method is kinda gold standard for portable.
i think even better would be if one puts data and setting folder out of main app directory so one could delete old app and just adjust linking in new app.
not sure if all portable apps or at least these here can this, need feedback from team on this.
i maybe ask seperately, as important and very interesting.

hope not

how do you would do then some backup and copy of apps to other place, drive or what ever
why to make it complicated when it can be done simple?
This setting be somewhere and the program somewhere else is the functionality of let say registry.
And exactly such functionalities need to be overcome when making portable apps. All should be kind of self contained as much as possible.

only for apps with huge user data

i mean if you use on pc, you could put settings and data next to app directory.
but other thing...
i think it would be improvement to having in app directory and overriding the old version.
i would rather do the described way and...
why registry...
i mean you can set in portable app where save settings directory.
i dont said i wouldnt do it for all apps...
but propably for apps with huge data, like some users complained here by huge data.
so in this cases better do so, so can update nice.

i help were i can. maybe you can help me too. threads in account/track.

then this is no more portable

the idea of portable apps is that they are 'selfcontained'
meaning I can fetch the folder with the app and have all I need for it to function where ever with portable apps.
If the data is somewhere and the app in other place, we have situation like in windows installed apps. The program is installed somewhere under c:/programfiles or what ever and the data for it under in the users folder.
But this is exactly what portable apps tries to avoid.
And you wish to have it back as in windows? Why do you use then portable apps at all?
Not best idea as far as I am concerned

not really done like this yet

not really done like this yet but if data would be huge and dont need to take it with you a solution.
but however, i thought it could be a solution for a guy having gb's of data he dont want to move.
if i need a joker i would do it, normally not.
i will better focus on looking for a calendar+kanban app or pim+kanban as opensorce, i saw no more as 4 on some alternativeto or what it was for site. that would be life saving, didnt saw he noting nice since the not really opensource one droped as argue with the dev or so.
maybe find a multi system also supporting smartphones, for later to sync...

portable means portable

If someone has lot of data, but still using portable app to manage it, what is the purpose to have a portable app for that. In such case use normal install able app, it may have even some advantages.

Other thing is to have data on a pure data storage and access it with some portable app. Why not, the only need is to have data connection to that storage where ever you are. This can be some commercial public storage, or some NAS at home serving same purpose.

But to have a portable app just without a data storage for it, no I would not like this.
