portable application to lock my USB key

Hello,

I am looking for a portable application that would entirely password lock my USB key so nobody could see the files without password. I need the application to be installed only on the USB key. It is enough if it would create a virtual disc on my USB. Can you help?

Thanks for help

Are you talking about TrueCrypt?

Because it encrypts all your files in a container and can mount the container as a virtual drive. But requires admin access.

www.tryecrypt.org

My TrueCrypt Portable (configured to be portable otb and includes Pengie's TCExplorer so you can access the files from the container w/o admin access): http://cubegames.net/downloads/TrueCryptPortable.exe

truecrypt-portable

hello,

thanks for help. Yes, it is what I am looking for.

But I have downloaded the truecrypt portable, extracted it but when I tried to run it I have got a message, that I must be logged in as a admin. Do you know some other portable application doing the same?

Thanks

Peter

No, with apps that do this you need admin privs

To load the drivers to mount the container as a drive.

Try running TrueCrypt Format.exe To create your container, I reccommend the algorithm Twofish or Twofish+Serpent (only if your drive is fast for the Twofish+Serpent) and for the hash algorithm don;t use SHA-1.
For file system use FAT

Extract your apps to your desktop and use TCExplorer select the container and import the apps into the container (I recommend 1st importing the suite then the folder that contain the apps you want into the PortableApps folder

Believe me I tried another product that was like TrueCrypt (but encryption was much weaker) but needs admin. That product was called Dehkart Private Disk.

admin rights...

hello,

Ok, installation needs admin rights. But what about usage? Do I need admin rights also for that?

If you use TCExplorer I spoke of

you can import/export, delete and rename stuff in a TrueCrypt container all with out admin privs.

non open source, non free

I have "centuries" looking for something like that... I have found some but...

There are a litle group of Portable Apps to lock your USB but, unfortunately, they are not open source and are not free... Sad

Try Google to find them..

BTW, there are some encripters at portablefreeware.com

and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,

Just to be absolutely clear:

Just to be absolutely clear: You will not be able to run an executable DIRECTLY from the TC-volume using TCExplorer.

In order to run a programm out of an TC-volume using TCE you will have to copy the programs folder to a temporary folder on the host machine (or your USB-stick) and run it from there.

Though not ideal this still appears absolutely ok for me, since

1) TC simply delivers a very - if not the most - secure way of encryption (e.g. it is one of the few tools using LRW mode instead of CBC).

2) The temporary apps folder can easily be deleted manually using Eraser Portable or any other shredder tool.

3) The author of TCE will update his tool in order to somehow integrate Eraser Portable in order to "automatically" delete the temporary apps folder after use.
