NOTE: This app will not be officially released as it doesn't work on Windows Vista (and probably later systems). Please use the officially-released WinWGet Portable instead:

I've just posted a pre-release of WackGet Portable. WackGet is a simple download manager that maintains a list of files to download and downloads them in order. MillWeed, the group that originally created this, has disappeared, but another open source group released a new version that fixed the only major outstanding bug (downloading large files failing).
Rob had done a version of this last year, but he's busy with other things. So, I created a new release using the newer techniques I've used with PuTTY and other apps. The launcher backs up and restores the registry key and adjusts your download path if you save to your portable device. It works on Windows 95 through Vista XP.
Download Directory Note: Keep in mind that saving to a flash RAM device will be slow and slow down your other apps.
Please give it a try and post any feedback.
Download WackGet Portable 1.2.3 Pre-Release 1
(may take a few minutes to hit the download servers)
Thanks,
John
I'll have to tweak it and test it when I get home, and when I am home I'll test it under Wine.
Maybe you should release this. Very soon.

As all of ya should know Microsoft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or Free BSD on yer Windows comp.
But, perhaps a quick pixel fix for the logo?
I noticed I screwed up the top right corner of the red image, so I fixed it in the png, so here's the enhanced png.
Better? Or worse? I like it better.

doesn't seem to work on vista somehow.after i double click the launcher and the splash disappears, an error pops up saying that WackGet.exe has stopped working.

Crashes on launch in vista
Actually, it seems WackGet itself (all releases) don't work on Vista. They work on all other Windows OSes, but not Vista. No idea why. Must be a new 'security' feature.

Just say support for Vista isn't available.
BTW, is there a way to run an executable in Win XP mode? (ALA "Run this program in compatibility mode for:")

pas compatible avec windows vista
Overall it seems to work good.
I've noticed something with the download directory. On the pc I installed it from the downloads defaulted to the directory I installed it from. On my laptop it defaulted to the root drive of my usb drive.
Is there a generic string I could use to have it default to say the desktop? or perhaps that could be put into the final release?
The release comments above say this is version 1.2.3 PR1, the Help -> About in the program shows 1.2.2b2, and inside WackGetPortable.nsi is says !define VER "1.4.0.0"
Which one is right and which version of the app should be included?

1.2.3 is either a mistake, or a less confusing way of displaying 1.2.2b2 and 1.4.0.0 is the version number of the launcher.

what advantages does this one have over the firefox extension DownThemAll which already works with portable firefox?
http://downthemall.net/
I'm quite sure DownThemAll is a download accelorator which John says don't play nice because they restrict other people from downloading when the server is busy. Perhaps John will list the DownThemAll extension when he does release this one as he did with FileZilla and then FireFTP as the extension.

The reason he said that was because DownThemAll can use up to 10 download thread/slots at the same time (it's user definable). You could set it to one slot used and be a nice guy if you want.

I'm trying to use WackGet Portable with the FlashGot extension in Firefox Portable to be able to stop web downloads and restart them later.
It works beautifully when WGP is not started. It starts the program, passes it the link, asks me where to save it (by choice), and then does its thing. However, if WGP is open the launcher throws a "program already running" type of error instead of passing it the new info. I do not always get this error though. I'm making the assumption here that the non-portable version of WackGet allows you to do this sort of thing. I'm operating under the fallacy of assumption and certainly deserve what I get.
I know that these are the kinds of problems that I run in to when trying to use software in a manner it was not intended to. I haven't been able to find the open-source group mentioned that last updated the application.
Any suggestions on workarounds or perhaps other software that will include the functionality I want? Specifically I want to be able to stop downloads and restart them later. I know FF3 is supposed to include this functionality, but I'm just impatient enough to throw a few hours at the problem before I tuck in for the long wait.
Thanks,
Jeremiah
does not appear to work in windows Vista. Strange as WinWget does work just fine in Vista. If this can be updated to work to vista I would much prefer it as it is what I was using when my machine was running XP and I prefer it to WinWget simply because it will start the download without further intervention from me, whereas WinWget requires that you hit the [OK and Run] button.
john, are you still interested in this? i'll take over it, if you wish.
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
Consider it a dead project we will not be doing. WackGet itself doesn't work on Vista. So, WackGet Portable will never be an official release.
If you'd like to pick up WackGet and fix whatever is keeping it from working on Vista, that would be great.

ok, i'll give it a try. where can i get the source code these days? www.millweed.com is not the homepage any more.
EDIT: nvm, i found the 1.2.2 source code. and can people give some feedback on the vista problem? like try disabling UAC and then try.
EDIT2: is anyone else going to help with this?

Sure- I'll give it a wack (ar, ar!).
