Portable Azureus completed!

Portable Azureus Vuze 3.0 (NO JAVA NEEDED!)

- Very fast loading
- Full Vuze functionality
- Can be run from any computer or straight from USB drive
- Does NOT depend on the Java Runtime Environment
- Compressed folder only 26mb
- Runs natively (No Thinstall nonsense!)

This took me eight hours straight; I needed a portable Azureus Blum
As i stated earlier this will work on any computer without the need for java.

Would appreciate feedback.
Download from one of these Mirrors;

Mirror 1:
Removed due to Java runtime being closed source for now.

Mirror 2:
Removed due to Java runtime being closed source for now.

Project will be put on hold until JRE becomes open source later this year.

How does your portable version of Azureus work

w/o Java? Unless Vuse is Java independent (never liked Vuse since it is a bit bloated with that BitTorrent store they added).

I use a program called Excelsior Jet. The following link should provide more information;

Is it closed source?

I'd like to know. I have even bookmarked the page, perhaps I'll portablize Java apps with this.

Closed

Im afraid its closed source. I have an Academic license; costs about $100
but you are free to use the evaluation version in full for 90 days. It's a great program.

Does it add closed source bits to Azuerues to make it Java

Independent? If so I think you can't promote this here. In addition why did you make v3 rather than v2 portable, v2 is much cleaner w/o that BittTorrent store crap. And also how do I get an academic discount? I am just in High School (9th grade). Also why did you zip it? Use 7-Zip to make a self-extracting archive and change the file extension to .paf.exe (after 7-Zipping it), just to make it quicker to add it to PAM.

Production and

Production and redistribution use of Excelsior JET Runtime on general purpose desktop computers and servers are royalty-free according to Excelsior. In actuality the end product isn't really closed source since its effectively just a downsized java runtime environment. So i can distribute the Azureus program, just not the Excelsior program which helped package it.

Whilst i was working on this last night i did in fact manage to accomplish the same thing without using the Excelsior program by creating a small java runtime environment and creating a jre config file which directed Azureus to the runtime environment. It worked perfectly and i was able to put it on a 128 mb usb stick and tested in on three computers which dont have the the Java Runtime installed. Only reason i uploaded the Excelsior one instead was because it takes care of any registry modification for me thus i can avoid having to do extra work with NSIS installers etc to make sure it leaves no traces on the computer. I did this in a bit of a hurry whilst i was experimenting around last night.

However if requested i can upload the completely open source method with a 7zip file containing a minimized packaged java runtime environment and the core Azureus 2.0/3.0 modules.

Is the cut-down JRE made from the official JRE?

if so then it would be closed source, since the official JRE is not GPLed yet (it is gonna be). Also is it possible to get the Academic discount by being in High School (9th grade).

As for what you made it did not leave any crap in the registry.

Ah

oh i see, i assumed JRE was already open source; My mistake. I believe the cut down JRE is made from the official JRE. I will try to confirm if thats the case

The license so far seems to be available only to universities; you need an academic email address in order to apply. More information can be found here;

Aww double boo

Is it available for non-university colleges? Also I know a guy that has is a Prof, is a Prof able to get a discount? But I think my school address is educational but it ends in .org rather than .edu but then again I am in High School so that sux.

yes

if he has an academic email address i believe he is qualified to apply for the license.

As per whether the end program implements jre or not all i could find so far on their website is the following; "Excelsior is a compiler that translates your application's classes and jars into optimized x86 (IA-32) code" don't know if that helps.

I was gonna compile some Java apps to be JRE independent/portable for myself.

It reads and uses the

It reads and uses the settings from any Azureus-installation on the host.
Guess that's why I never saw the Vuze-interface .
When can we expect the next version ?

Sun is/has open-sourced JAVA

Sun is/has open-sourced JAVA .
Not everything has been open-sourced yet but it's in the process,
read about it here : http://www.sun.com/software/opensource/java/
It seems that Sun is serious about this but legal aspects are complicating
things a bit.
The JET license on the other hand might be a problem.

as a fan of both Azureus and applications that don't need installing
this is most welcome . I think you should keep working on it, meanwhile
I (and several others) will give it a good test.
In fact it's already running nicely and it does seem to start a lot faster ...thx

Yes it is possible, ive got

Yes it is possible, ive got three different portable azureus packages on my computer which i made yesterday;

Option 1 - The Excelsior method: which is the one i have uploaded here, which works by compiling the Java class files into native x86. For this i used the Excelsior program which packages everything into a small .EXE program which when run will open Azureus on any computer without the need for java.

Option 2 - The Thinstall method: Used the Thinstall virtualisation suite to package JRE and Azureus into one .EXE program

Option 3 - The Java on the USB method: For this what i did was created a very small Java runtime environment composed of only the core essentials for Azureus to work. I then created a config parameter telling Azureus where to find the Java files. I then put the Azureus program and the "Mini Java" into one folder and put it on my memory stick. This works perfectly and i have tested it on a few computers which don't have java and it works without a problem.

So you see i can provide any of the above methods for users to download. The reason why i uploaded the 1st Method using Excelsior is because i felt that it had excellent compression engines and it handled the registry issue very well thus elminating the need for me to have to work with NSIS installers etc. But like i said if requested i can provide one of the alternative methods like the 'java on the USB' as you stated.

Could you make Version 2.5 also portable

Since it doesnt have the BitTorrent store (which is a bloat IMO).

He means Vuze

and you might not have seen it if you have Azurues 2.5.0.4 installed,
even when running this portable version, as it seems to read and use the settings of your local installation . Also, it writes do the user-profile on the host.
I downloaded the trial-excelsior JET and made my own, using Azureus 2.5.0.4,
the latest cvs azureus2.jar and a bunch of plug-ins.Works fine but unfortunately I can't share it as it seems to only work on the machine is was created on .
I also tried to hide the DOS-prompt with the GUI.exe on the version offered here..
DON'T do that, it does work but it changes the files so they appear to be made with the trial thus only working on my own machine .
btw ; if you make your own don't bother with the safepeer-plugin.
Azureus now supports IP-blocklist without plugins .

yeah, the next step is to do

yeah, the next step is to do a more thorough job and package it under NSIS so that it doesn't interfere with other installations of Azurues on the Host computer. The point is the portable does work if you're using it on computers which dont have azureus installed, otherwise as discovered it conflicts with existing installations of Azureus. But as a first attempt it does show what is possible. After consulting with someone, ive decided for now im putting this project on hold and may continue it at a later date once JRE becomes open source.

For now i have removed download links.

I will however later on provide very simple instructions for running Azureus from a usb drive for anyone to try.

Non-Java Azureus

I had found a version of Azureus, I believe it was called Azureus Lite, that did not require Java. It looks exactly like that Advanced tab in Azureus Vuze and that was the entire program. If someone can find it, that could be made portable easily by just installing it to a USB Drive.

uTorrent is not open source

uTorrent is not open source and the company that owns the code was bought out by Bittorent, Inc which works closely with the MPAA. Use it at your own risk.

Open Source Azureus 2.5

Azureus 2.5 is open source Azureus 3.0 is not, well parts of Azureus 3.0 a.k.a. Vuze are open source, what i was wondering was, if you could redo the portable Azureus and make it Azureus 2.5 so that it could be re-released. thanks, i know about utorrent, Azureus works better for me.
