I would think it would be nice if someone made a portable version of the official spotify client

It's unlikely. Spotify's desktop app is just a full browser. When you install it, you're getting another full browser install (over 350MB) in your %APPDATA%\Spotify folder. It's a full Chromium browser just to load their website and have it as a separate icon on your taskbar.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
