For the record, I largely don't know what the heck I'm talking about here, but if GIMP uses the pango library, then it understands truetype fonts just fine – it's opentype fonts (.otf) that throw it a curve. I ran into this issue when I first picked up inkscape. I have a $350 collection of typefaces that inkscape refused to acknowledge because pango has (or had; I don't know if this issue has been resolved) problems with typ1 headers. I would use links to back this up, but I'm too lazy to substantiate my claims (and besides, its a boring topic that noone but me is interested in, and I only care because I'm a type nut).
On the main GIMP wondow: Click FILE, then go down the menu and click on PREFERENCES.
In the PREFERENCES window, click on the very bottom folder called FOLDERS.
This will expand ans show other folders. Click on the FONTS folder.
On the right side of the window, it will list the folders that GIMP looks at to find your fonts. Simply add the folder that has the fonts that you want GIMP to see.
I got over 200 fonts from a free font site, and all of them work.
