OpenOffice - Writer spellcheck isues, howto correct ???

Using openoffice basicly from the beginning, and have to say,
never bugged about spellcheck
However, now i am getting older and spellcheck is more used as i tought
i noticed some weard stuff.
in basic, i think it isnt working here.(or never did)
first of all, my native language is dutch, not english
when i set up a document and hit the F7 key for spellcheck, it supposed to check the writing agains the languagedatabase
and here it fail,,, no spellcheck and/or suggestion for wrong written text happens.
soh,, any idea what i did wrong, or doing wrong.
