Portable WMP plug-in for portable firefox

Microsoft has developped a WMP plug-in for firefox. I would like to know if such plug-in is available for Portable Firefox or if there is a compliant WMP portable plug-in ?

Thanks

Any plugin you can use on

Any plugin you can use on regular FF you should be able to install and use on portable FF.

How about a link to this plugin?

Apparently not

Apparently not because it uses a windows installer instead of a .xpi file. Sad

Closed sorce

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't WMP (like all other M$ formats) closed source?
If it is, a portable WMP plug-in cannot be created(at least not on this site and without breaking the laws).

Yeah

I should have edited my post after finding the installer since it's not an .xpi file, closed source, etc.

Stop talking about laws, who

Stop talking about laws, who cares, this is not a law forum, open your mind, start talking about portable apps. Even if you might not redistribute it you can provide instructions/sourcecode/etc.

To the topic I can say the following. You can use any plugin in portable manner, I done that at lot and it works fine. Just copy it to the plugins folder in data dir of portable firefox.

possible solution?

pardon me if I'm wrong, but after installing a plugin, don't you just get a resulting xpt, dll, or exe which will deal with the necessary file types? I'm guessing firefox simply loads all files in the plugins folder on launch. So, install the wmv plugin on a local install on a comp where you have rights, and jsut transfer the resulting file to your portable install, into the PortableFirefox/Apps/firefox/plugins folder.

If that works, great, if not, maybe some config file needs to be modified. I can't imagine needing to install something like this.

its portable

I've tested the plugin installer with sandboxie, it installs only to the plugin folder > 3 files. I copied the 3 files to my data\plugins folder on my usb and played a wmp file, sure enough it worked.

Anywho.. I've uploaded a zip file which contains the original plugin installer, and the 3 unextracted files. Check the readme.txt if you need some help.

Greeting and welcome to

Greeting and welcome to portable apps.

I thought I should point out a couple of things.

1. You are reactivating a very old thread which is generally frowned upon.
2. You are new, unknown member, but are linking to an anonymous posting service package which contains, if I read your post correctly, a non-open source binary executable.

I think you can see the risks involved here.
We do not know who you are and can't read the code of the executable.

I would have to recommend that folks get the executable from the source, which I will try to find after posting this. I don't know enough about coding to comment on extracted files.

I'm sure your files are probably fine, and no offense is intended but generally people should use caution when downloading unknown content from unknown sources and I can't recommend it. My security settings prevent me from downloading files from anonymous posting services that require javascript.

I'm sure some brave soul in the forum will download it and give us feed back.
Any takers?

Tim

{edit: the executable can be found here:
http://port25.technet.com/archive/2007/04/16/windows-media-player-plug-i...
Which I think is the same as the one from Buddha listed above.
The files can be extracted using Universal Extractor or the like.

The md5 checksum for the standard wmpfirefoxplugin.exe is:
ed324284fa119ef0f240ac9e2262d666
The md5 checksum for my version of np-mswmp.dll, which I think is the only file needed, is:
99f97c9fe748c37528c338a423577fcb }

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

i don't think this would

i don't think this would work on a system that doesn't have wmp or it's core installed already. is there a way to make firefox show wmp streams without having to have wmp or it's core installed? thanks

How to get this to work.

Yes i finally got it to work on my firefox:
First i had to download the plugin from:
http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-down...
I used My 7-ZipPortable to extract the wmpfirefoxplugin.exe file, i then open the folder and went for the big file named ffplugin.msi, i extracted it, and went for the file named ffPlugin.cab i extracted it and found a file name NPMSWMPdll inside, i renamed this file to np-mswmp.dll and copied the file to FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\plugins.

Yes, there was a wmp-player installed on this windows computer. So I guess this will only be helpfull for people who have wmp installed.

Smile
