Portable Key-logger

It'd be cool to see a portable key-logger, so I could record key strokes on the computer I'm on to see if someone used it when I walked away of something. I don't want to leave it on there and then walk away and watch everyone's key strokes or anything, just from my flash drive.

No, I think could write a basic one without admin rights. They would only need that to monitor a program that has admin rights.

Not that I like keyloggers or anything.

It should be easy to write

It should be easy to write in Auto Htotke / Auto It / Power Pro.
They work everywhere. And every anti-keylogger it tried fails to find them Biggrin

First of all this is illegal. And second of all you can get some pretty sensitive info by key logging and I don't think anyone who uses that computer would like that very much. Shouldn't someone delete this thread?

LOL what are you with the FBI. We arent discussing any links or were to get any and if we would, Keyloggers are perfectly legal on Home PC's for personal use. I myself understand it is illegal to put a keylogger on a public computer or on computers other then mine in general. It is not like I go out putting keyloggers on school computers Smile i could get in deep sh** for doing stuff like that and for what? a couple of passwords for emails so its common sense just not to since everything on public computers are logged so if that network has a good admin, that script kitty(or hacker) is now in deep sh**

I do NOT want to leave it on after I disconnect the USB drive. I want it to see if someone tried something when I walked off to the toilets or to talk to someone, print something, etc.

Lock machine

How about locking your machine when you walk away to prevent people from using your login in the first place.

The whole keylogger thing sounds shady to me to begin with.

If you...

Can find one, I may try to make it portable just for fun. (An open-source one) only for the reason you stated above. Because it's just not cool to put a key-logger on someone elses machine to monitor them, but I'm sure there's a couple logical reasons, so why not.

Hope one of them is good for the job..

NSI Script

The cool thing about this is that it includes the sourcecode AND the NSI script. Therefore, you can see where files are written to and which registry settings are created. It's all right there.

First of all the key loggers

First of all the key loggers alone are NOT illegal, it depends on how you use them. I would also like to see a portable key logger added.

Sure there are reasonable

Sure there are reasonable legal uses.

I've used them together with a screen recorder for documenting bugs in software testing.

I've used them to slap Dell's wrists when their support claimed there was nothing wrong with a computer that thought I was banging away at the Ctrl key whenever I plugged in an external monitor. By using a keylogger, it was easy to prove that the computer thought the key was repeatedly pressed, even with a fresh boot into a CD version of Windows PE.

So, I'm all for including a keylogger.

i see no bad impletmentations if we use it to prove something and not to hack

i myself if made portable might use it to show people things wrong with programs and hardware issues

I can only think of illegal

I can only think of illegal uses for key logging

any 'pretend' uses for legit use, really don't hold water.

This tool is SO illegal that anyone even sniffing one would get fired, leave well alone and if the hackers want one - go and bloody find it yourself.

This is a legit forum for sensible people.

in that case ....

.. you have a one-track criminal mind :).
as it has been said before : it is perfectly legal to run a key-logger
on your own computer(s.)
Maybe not in Germany, they have just banned ALL "hacker"-tools including sniffers and pw-crackers. Imagine the fun net-admins are going to have with dis-satisfied ex-employees changing the password ?

the ethical side of this.. that's another story

There are quite a few legit uses for key-loggers:

-For parents: If they don't trust their kids or their kids when their friends are over or something, you could install a key-logger or such and monitor what they do and keep it to the parent's standards.
-For schools/libraries/offices: To make sure kids/patrons/employees stay within the guidelines.
-For partners: Although not really ethical, if you don't trust your partner then you should consider reviewing your relationship, but you could use this to monitor your partners activities on the net.

All of these are legal, and legit. The last one and possibly the first one are less ethical, but, that doesn't necessarily make it illegal. (Though I'm not promoting a lack of ethics, but you get my point).

It takes some money but try this.

A simple google search using the keywords "portable keylogger" produced this. It's not free, but is portable, GUI licensed keylogger. It will run on 98 to Vista. It was however the only portable keylogger I found.

Portable keylogger

I came across this thread and while nothing here worked for me, I did finally find something elsewhere. You'll have to register (free) to access the file but you can go to:

http://www.board.ultimate-caffe.org/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=12701&hilit=key...

It runs without installing, you can hide it if you wish and it will log sites, keystrokes and bunches of other stuff. My antivirus picked it up but as long as I picked ignore it worked just fine.

Returning to the usecase the OP has:

I doubt it would be too difficult to write a small program to monitor the KeyBoard and Mouse and tell you if any activity occurred without logging it (maybe have a TrayIcon and change it when there is activity)
Anyway, AutoHotKey seems like it would be a good place to start making something for this if anyone still wants it.

Then again, its been years since this was posted, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't feel the need for it anymore.

Security Software

The problem with keyloggers and also AutoHotKey (or similar scripting languages) is that they tend to trip security software. If you're using public computers then you're unlikely to have access to the security software to disable it or add exceptions. This could be problematic.

Did you know

that you can actualy keyloag without a program on the computer, there was an article a while back about how one could log what keys are pressed on any keyboard wirelessly (for any keyboard) from at most 10 ft away. each key has its own frequency and that can be detected if you have the correct equipment.

yes sure

one can also see with suitable equipment what the graphic card produces and display it on a screen of other computer, definitely further then 10m.
This is called tempest attack and therefore certain services have computers in special enclosures so no such signals come out.

but keylogger, well get one of those:

For those stating no valid reasons to use...

I've had instances where my employer asked me to install "software" to monitor employees use of work computers. This was in a hotel. What the employer was asking me to look for was not what passwords were used, but when and who was browsing porn sites at work.

I understand your concern, but there are legitamate reasons to use this kind of software. Dare I say, even honorable. I have twice been asked tom lookm for abuses on work computers. While I don't like to do it, I feel the employer has the right to protect the work environment.

I can see the flames coming now, so this is the only time I'll comment about this, but, I for one, could use this. I just wanted to add my two cents worth. Peace...

Better Ways

There are far better ways to do this than to use a keylogger. All of which you can do at the network level without needing to put a portable keylogger on something.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

If you are sure answer or Don't speak

First sorry for my bad English...

I could not understand why the people are asking always about keyloggers? You should not ask this question. Because it is not your businnes. Sorry because I am telling it exaclty. But this is the true. To use keylooger not means we are hacking the people. There are many good reasons to use them. If you are so sure that people do never need keylooger, answer or tell me a solution for this problem:

"I need to catch my child, what they are doing on computers. But I don't want to block them. I want them to use internet with everything free. But if I see that they are using it for bad things, I will talk to them."

So tell me a solution now? Or don't speak! Don't tell anything like: "keyloogers are not legal", "why you want to use them", "you can do the same thing with other programs". (Additional note: Keyloogers are very easy to use.)

enough other solutions

in any current operating system or 3rd party programs. Parental lock or so , need to be configured only, to be found on any current computer. So far for the solution. It is there already.

To spy on your kids with keylogger, well not very efficient anyway, as easy to bypass in fact.

But there we come to questions: I am allowed to open envelope and read normal mail for my daughter found in our mailbox today? I want just make sure she does not get letter from someone whom she should not get any letters from.

Simple answer is: in most civilized countries this is exactly the same as reading neighbors or your boss's mail. It will prosecuted by law.

And so spying or reading texts which do our children write is not legal and it is not a sign of proper own character at all.

To use keylogger on my personal computer(s) is not legal?! Let's say it is not legal. If my (parent resposibility) own 8 years old child sits and use my personal computer and i have started keylooger, I am guilty?

depends on where you live

if you live in places like I live, then it is not legal to spy on anyone and read anyones mail etc.
In country where I live (see sig) you might be put into prison for that.
So in many other countries.

I used to work as telecoms operator in international traffic and it was not possible for technical reasons for me to not read other peoples text.
(Marine radio officer)
I had to go for that purpose to special office in each country I worked on flag of registry for and sign special document that as I can see some of the text transmitted/received, I will not disclose or use the knowledge of it otherwise for the rest of my life.

You can use key logger for your own fun, to log your *own* correspondence if you have fun on that.
What other users do is not for your eyes and if you administer such computer, you must not disclose contents or use that knowledge.

You are free to use parental lock on your computer to prevent the current user to do certain tasks, but it is very bad behavior to spy on correspondence of anybody including your children or any members of your family.

The same way it is forbidden for companies to spy on employees as what they do write or do exactly on their computers. It is well allowed to block certain cervices, websites, protocols and hardware on the company network. It is further allowed to log all connections on the gateway level, as all service providers have to do it anyway and store that information for at least 6 months. This info can be used very restrictive, not just when some admin feels he would like to know..

as you say: "You can use key

as you say:

"You can use key logger for your own fun, to log your *own* correspondence if you have fun on that."

In additional until my 8 years old child will open me a new case, I am not guilty (until he says my dad check my text messages) and i can use this.

So there are people who can use keyloogers legally. So the request is possible and should be accept. But ofcourse the portable is going to make by any voluntary developer. So we should wait.

depends where you live

here it is prosecuted by public law and not only by private law, so here it is prosecuted also when the 'damaged' did not open a case but it otherwise came out that someone did spy on someone.

So where I live there is no legal use for key logger for any natural person.

In some european countries even possession of such software is prohibited by public law.
They even discuss that possession or download of sniffer software like wire shark should need special permission, something like someone holding a gun needs too.

There may be special cases where a court of justice directs someone explicitly to do so (police) in one particular case and within clearly defined limits (time etc).
Legislative is now discussing give the justice a tool where in some special cases police could try to implant a trojan to someones PC to monitor his work, this in aim fight against terrorism etc. But also here, if it will pass the legislative, it will be only allowed per case and in very serious crime situation and all has to be authorized and closely supervised by court of justice.

Furthermore it is highly immoral to spy on someone , but this is a different story.

And if the customs allow it in your country, you can order:
