mtPaint Portable

I found this Open-Source GTK paint program, it's actually a pretty good program. It would be cool to work with GTK and stuff, and now with John's common files setup, I could probally work that in. Here's a few links, I'll play around with it a bit more, it's not Paint.NET, but it's still pretty good, let me know if you guys have any reasons why I shouldn't give it a shot.

And John, please let me know if you already have, or plan to do this one yourself. Because I know my version will just become pointless if you release a version.

Thank you, here are the links.

It seems like a good choice, as it's a good program, it doesn't use .NET :P, it will help me learn to make GTK apps, it's under the GPL, and development is continuing.
But do let me know any reasons why I shouldn't, and let me know if you would want it.

Thanks.

Good.

Yea, like it doesn't have the extreme simplness of MSPaint, but it's got more features, and it doesn't have the still easy-to-use interface of Paint.NET with its amazing features, but it's also doesn't have the hard-to-useness of a first user using GIMP. Blum

.

WRT the GTK CommonFiles, John decided not to use GTK in the CommonFiles directory because all apps use different versions (think DLL Hell).

mtpaint?

I saw discussion from the end of July 2007, about adding mtpaint as a portable app.
Has anyone done it? If so, please post instructions. I have used it and love it. I also like Paint.net but see the issues with it as a portable. I have used GIMP and hate it.

Yea

I decided against it cause it's not all what I'm looking for, and the interface isn't quite there. rgbpaint is a little nicer, but Linux only.

I'll

do it, if nobody has any arguments. I'm still looking for a portable video editor ;).

Please do it.

Gimp is a little big and slow in my opinion to run off of a flash drive (Though I still run it directly from my own computers). So if you did this that would be great.

Also your complicated math signatures hurt my little brain. Smile

mtpaint followup

In using mtpaint and GIMP, I find mtpaint is far quicker, more intuitive and far easier for photo touchups.
I emailed the author of mtpaint and my email and his response are copied bellow:

I wrote:
> I love mtpaint and would love to see it as a portable app for Usb flash
> drive on windows machines.
> Do you know if this has been done yet?
The author replied:
Seems it still hasn't - my guess is, because of everyone waiting for
someone else to do it for them. Smile Of _technical_ problems, there are
none - mtPaint package for Windows is entirely self-sufficient and
mostly self-contained; the only thing which is stored outside it is
mtPaint's inifile, '.mtpaint' which goes into current user's profile
directory.
To store it elsewhere, changing one line in 'inifile.c' will be
sufficient - the only question is, where should that "elsewhere" be?
If you have a definitive answer for that, I could add it as some kind
of option.

And with mtPaint package as it is now, inifile can be carried on flash
drive and just copied to profile directory and then back to flash -
either manually, or by launching 'mtpaint.exe' through a batch file
which does the copying.-= With best regards, Dmitry Groshev =-

Encouraged by this reply, I did create a folder for mtpaint in the portable apps folder of the usb drive, copied the complete windows package to the folder and unpacked it on the usb. I had to move programs out of the root directory of the folder so the portable apps menu would not list the wrong program. I made it so it does not appear on the start menu. I have to use portable expore to find and launch mtpaint.exe from the bin folder which is cumbersome but does work. It would seem some of you that know how to make things with portable apps start menu could make this work as it should. Let me know if you get it working smoothly with the start menu. In the mean time I have a portable free windows photo edit program that I can work with.-hv
