IRC Chat Room

EDITED:

I have a IRC Server setup running UnrealIRCd with Anope Services and a few other add-ons. If you or anyone else here is interested in creating or congregating in a channel specifically dedicated to the portableapps.com site/scene, I would be more than happy to accommodate.

---

Since the interest seems to be showing a bit, I went ahead a created a private room on the server and coded a page with information on how to join/connect.

John if you want to add your own or need the source for anything I used let me know. I hope using your logo was alright, if not I will remove it.

Here's the link to all the information.

Hope to see you all there. Wink

In the

Forum Guidelines, it says "search the site before posting" but maybe thats not clear enough.
But I think a message like the one we had some days ago because the downloads werent working would be TOO MUCH.

Wasn't specifically meaning

Wasn't specifically meaning something of that magnitude. Just something on the forum at the top like next to New Posts or centered asking to search before posting is all.

It does

Try creating a new post and it says it in a paragraph at the top of the page.

Appreciate the offer

But I haven't used IRC in about 10 years. Smile I think I'm showing my age.

I dunno, would people have interest in it?

hehe

Little over 10 years is probably how long I have been using IRC. Never was one for huge networks like Efnet though. I always stuck to smaller private ones. Even with MSN IM, YIM, ICQ, AIM, GoogleTalk, Skype ect, I still feel IRC as a community oriented gathering spot than any else.

So this is a question to the community here. You guys want an IRC channel?

If so I will dump the details and even toss up a web based Java client for those unfamiliar with IRC clients or willing the take the time to set it up in the Portable Apps messengers that support the protocol Wink

And your "age"? hahaha

I have a feeling you may have me beat but I am knocking on 30.

I don't.

But I know many people would be interested and I think it's one of the more "necessary" apps.

Might be a good option to have

I'm sure there's still a few IRC chat rooms floating around, so a portable IRC chat client could come in handy.

Sounds good. I dunno about

Sounds good. I dunno about the IRC, though. What would we use it for?

Updated

See the first post in this thread as I have edited and updated with the information.

"What would it be used for"

Well real-time collaboration and general chatting I would assume. If more than 2 or 3 people are working on the same project or people needed help with anything it would be far more efficient than trading emails back and forth ect.

Basically just a gathering spot for like minded people to enjoy one another's company or to work on things. The better the support for these projects the faster they get accomplished.

Think that sums it up.

Sweet.

I like that idea.

What do you find is the beta open source IRC client for Windows?

Not sure...

I have always been and always will be an mIRC (not open source) user. Other than that you could always use ChatZilla plugin for FireFox Portable, GAIM/Pidgin, Miranda or HydraIRC - http://www.hydrairc.com/ . Speaking of, HydraIRC would probably make a nice addiction to the PA site.

Google would know better than myself.

Nope - It's Not Open

HydraIRC is yet another program pretending to be open source when it's not. The source is available, but the license prohibits you from doing much of anything with it. This would essentially qualify as "shared source" ala Microsoft's pretend open source stuff.

Ahh Haa!

Well there goes that suggestion.

When I get done perusing the forums today and after I do the #$@! dishes I'll take a gander around the net and see if I can find us an open source IRC client for all the lushes out there.

It seems.

He just wants people to improve his code, and then it will become his property. It's like a commercial product with free community development with no recognition. Blum

Arg

You stopped in and left as I was finishing up the dishes!

As I work from home online I'm always idling via messengers and IRC so if you stop in and don't get a reply right away I am either sleeping or eating. Though my woman might have me "tied" up with something sometimes as well, hehe.

Thanks for stopping in though porterkm, you popped the portableapps.com irc cherry.

Thanks.

I noticed the License on HydraIRC here before John mentioned it, hopefully one of the others if good thought, thanks Zach, I would have forgot to look there, I usually only check Wikipedia and Google.

And somehow this reply ended up as a comment? Meh, thats cool too.

Plus and Minus

I've used IRC for what seems like an eternity.....I continue to use it and offer several channels for the amateur radio community.

While it's immediate, and can create a real sense of community, the downside is that there is no base of information that we see in forums like this....a user logs on...and if no one is there, sees nothing.

That being said, there are some folks who will use IRC and avoid other modes.

One use for the portable apps channel would be to test the portable IRC clients....

Sig Link

pkeffect... sorry man, but you'll have to remove that as your signature link. You can only link to a personal homepage (I'd had people get upset about selective enforcement, so it's a blanket thing now).

Your main site is a blog correct?

So maybe if you link pfeffect.com, you can make the link called "My Blog and PortableApps Developer Chat". Though, I don't even think that's aloud. :P, maybe just "My Blog"

Hmmm

Probably just add alot more information about PA.COM to the chat page itself and link to it from my homepage anyway.

I'm sure John won't mind more traffic anyway. Smile

IRC chat client

There is always XChat2 ya know. I love it, love it luuuuuuv it and I do wish someone would make it portable. It was originally a Linux app, but people have made Windows ports......... some charge, some did it for free.

Here's where I got it. http://www.silverex.org/download/

I think Patrick may be

I think Patrick may be working on XChat2 actually. If not I'm sure he will be now or someone else may pick it up.

One could also add the server and chat room to the list in said application to make it easier and if it support SSL go ahead and add the libeay32.dll % ssleay32.dll .

Just a suggestion as not all machines have OpenSSL installed.
