GTK Version (Pidgin & GIMP) - Supporting Windows 9x?

I've been debating which version of GTK to bundle with Pidgin Portable 2.1 when it is released. Up until now, I've been bundling GTK 2.6.x since it still supports Windows 95/98/Me. However, 2.6 is no longer maintained and 2.10.x has been adding in lots of handy bug fixes with each release. So, it comes down to two choices:

1. Keep bundling 2.6 with the packages and have the products still have some of the old bugs but work on Windows 95/98/Me

2. Bundle 2.10 and have the packages, by default, not work with Windows 95/98/Me

Now, at this point, I'm inclined to go with option 2. But we wouldn't be leaving older Windows users in the cold. I'd package up 2.6 as an independent install and let users install it to Pidgin or GIMP.

I'd love to hear other thoughts on all this.

Thanks,
John

I vote for option 2.

I vote for option 2 for two reasons. First, I personally don't use any Windows 9x machines. Second, you would still be releasing GTK 2.6.x for users who do use Windows 9x.

In my opinion

it is the best to do it the way you said.
Most people can have the updated version with the bugfixes and everything and the rest (who needs it) can use the older version.

Exactly

That's exactly my opinion.

Are there any important

Are there any important upgrades since 2.1?
If there's nothing really special, I vote for 2.1.
Old Win 9x machines are not really common, but they still exist.
There are also some new ones. Win 95 / 98 are suggested on QEMU machines, because 2K / XP are significantly slower.

Ton

There have been a ton of bug fixes between 2.6 and 2.10... some that cause crashes. Here are the release notes for 2.10.13 for example.

(Note that it's not 2 point 1... it's 2 point 10 which is greater than 2 point 6)

Package 2.6 alone for installing on older systems.

Just you

I think it's just you, m2. Looks like it will be 2.10 by default with an optional download of 2.6 for folks that encounter ancient PCs.

Oops, mistake.

Oops, mistake. I read it too quickly and for a strange reason I thought that 2.10 is 2.1.0 and is the version compatible with 9x.
-1 for 2.6, +1 for 2.10 Wink

I vote for 2.10.x

Not sure if the decisions been finalized yet or not, but since the bulk of the world is using windows 2000 or higher, I figure 2.10.x would be better in the long run.

I also concur with the idea to have an optional download for the older version of GTK for computability with the retro versions of Windows.
