Ok, so the Toucan homepage says it's compatible with 98, but when i try to run it, it says it's not compatible

Sad

Really,

it should work, can I ask for an exact copy of the error message. Also have you got the Microsoft Layer for Unicode installed?

It's a Message Box with

It's a Message Box with "wxWidgets Fatal Error" header, which says: "This program uses Unicode and requires Windows NT/2000/XP. Program aborted."
I have unicows.dll in Windows/system folder.

unicows.dll may not actually

unicows.dll may not actually be installed/registered by Windows (meaning it may be in the right folder but Windows doesn't know it exists for some reason). Try downloading this again, run the installer, then test Toucan again.

I have it already and it

I have it already and it doesn't help. Toucan doesn't use unicows. And this Microsoft's unicows.exe file is just a self-extracting archive, it doesn't install or register anything. BTW, for eMule it is perfectly OK to put unicows.dll in windows/system. Well, W98 users probably should use other programs...

Toucan under Win98

I, like "spitfire", am having trouble running Toucan Portable on Windows 98 system. Don't know if I have Microsoft Layer for Unicode installed. Is that the 1.1.3790.0 version of unicows that contains "unicows.dll" and "unicows.pdb? Where does one install it? To "C:\Windows\System" on a Window 98 machine or the directory the "toucan.exe" executable is installed to? Does the "unicows.dll" have to be registered or installed (using regsvr32 or something else)?

For now I have Toucan on a Windows 98 desktop system as a PortableApp executable installed under the "PortableApp Suite Base 1" startup menu. I'm test driving portable apps on the hard drive of my desktop system.

Upon execution I get an error dialog box titled "wxWidgets Fatal Error" with the following message included: "This program uses Unicode and requires Windows NT/2000/XP. Program aborted"

I'll look

onto this (once I find my 98 disks and install them into a virtual machine). However I can't say that I will spend a lot of time on it as 98 is not longer supported my Microsoft (although if there was enough demand then I could compile an ANSI build that would defiantly work).

Right then,

I've done some research into this and it turns out that getting Win98 support is far easier than I though, it'll be included in the upcoming 1.2.1 patch.
