Portable Apps on Bootable USB

I know it has been asked and discussed here before but I finally go it to work.
Here's a Screenshot

What You Need:
PEBuilder
Ultimate Boot Disc Windows
Sherpya XPE
PA autorun Plugin
The plugin is made to work with my menu, but you can edit it to launch PAM as well.
Some basic instructions to get you started.

From the ultimate Boot Disc Windows, all you want is the GeoShell plugin, this gives you the taskbar and system tray.

From the Sherpya, all you want is the xpe.inf file you will have to edit out the XPE specific stuff near the top.

Once you get the bootable usb working, copy your portable apps folder to the usb.
Next time you boot to it, the PortableAppsMenu will load.

Once I have some more time I will post better instructions.

hmmmm

I think you need items 1, 3 and 4 or items 2 and 4 not all 4. Item 2 includes items 1 and 3.

If all you need is a GeoShell plugin for PEBuilder there are several you can choose from on the 911CD forum (http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showforum=30), like this one http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?s=&showtopic=2291&view=findpost&p..., to go with the http://www.geoshell.com/ software.

You are correct.

You are correct.
However I was trying to minimize the size of the boot image and the Sherpya image can get rather large. But if you only use the GeoShell plugin you don't get support for some other apps like explorer and apps that use msxml like my menu.
Which is why I used the one xpe file.
Although now that I think about it, I didn't look at the image size once I got it working. I'll have to build a sherpya image again to see how big a basic build is, I think I remember it being about 250mb. I am trying to keep the boot image size under 200 so it can boot on systems with as little as 264mb.

Image size and RAM are not synonymous

Not all apps get loaded when you boot unless your loading everything into RAM and booting from there.

If image size is a consideration look into using WinBuilder. http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=19988

What happens to your wallpaper if the screen's resolution is change to 1024x768?

I may be wrong but, I

I may be wrong but, I believe if you are booting from usb it does load the entire bootable iso into memory.
Not the same as booting from a CD.

It depends on how you set up

It depends on how you set up your USB stick. Mine boot just like the CDs. And mine have the same files as the CDs. Booting an ISO is not manditory to boot a USB stick. It's just one option.

Have you had any

Have you had any compatibility issues with not booting to a CD image?
Can you give me a brief explanation of how you set it up?

None

I used PEtoUSB to format one stick and to load BartPE to it. I used the HP format utility to format another which I boot to DOS and then use DOS and Grldr menus to boot various apps including BartPE. I don't remember how I did the hds.

I use a couple of CMD scripts to reformat, update or rebuild the sticks which are primarily XCOPY commands (xcopy %BartPE%\%I386%\*.* %HD%\MININT\ /s /d /y )

The main differences between BartPE on a CD and on a USB stick or hd is the I386 folder gets renamed to MININT and updating is possible rather than only rebuilding. Smile

A key consideration is ensuring all references to files and folders in the XML and CMD scripts use the system variables for drive and location rather than hard coded values. (%ramdrv%, %systemdrive%, etc)
