What USB do you use?

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in what brand(s) of USB drive u think is good and has worked well for u. and their read/write speeds. Biggrin

I currently have 3 usb drive:

1GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro w/Skins
Speed: 18328 KB/s read,4428 KB/s write

1GB LG USB Drive
Speed: 7600 KB/s read,2800 KB/s write

512MB TekQ
Speed: 10102 KB/s read,930 KB/s write

the SanDisk Cruzer one is that one i use the most and the one i use to store my portableapps in. it's fast and works great. it's also very small, but duarable. it also came with these skin things. the LG one is alrite but i don't like it's design, very plasticy and fragile. the TekQ one has a nice design but the read/write speed is terrible, and it sumhow managed to come apart but surprisingly still works.

to test the read/write speed of my USBs i used a program called Brute Benchmark. Just download it, extract it, launch Brute.exe then click on the Benchmark tab, then click on "Change...". Then at the bottom, from the drop down menu, locate your USB drive, press "OK". Then just click on the picture of the HDD to test your USBs read/write speed, it'll only take around 30sec. Wink

3 Drives

2Gb SanDisk Cruzer Micro
14113 KB/s read, 1764 KB/s write
(In use. I will retest later and see if all the programs shut down would make a difference.)

1Gb Toshiba
9768 KB/s read, 2442 KB/s write

512Mb GeekSquad
10698 KB/s read, 3780 KB/s write

I use the SanDisk for my main drive. I am looking at getting a 4Gb version soon. Just waiting for the deal and the extra $.

Retest

Retested 2Gb SanDisk with all programs including PAM (or PAP). Not a significant change. The read went down and the write went up.

BTW - If you are in the states most of the Office Max and Office depot stores are running specials on 4Gb sticks right now. $35-40 seems to be the going rate for 4Gb on sale. I just don't get paid until next week. I am sure they will have sales then too.

1 Drive

Kingston DataTraveler 1GB- 12352 KB/s read, 1625 KB/s write. I wouldn't buy this one again.

I used to have an Apacer, which finally died after three years of flawless performance.

And, I plan on getting a 60GB Western Digital Passport hard drive (too cheap to get a larger one ).

8GB

I currently use an A-Data PD2 8GB USB drive. I am finding that 8GB is just not enough. They have the 16GB out now for $129 but I have a feeling the 32GB will be out soon. I think I will wait for the 32GB.
I find that the A-Data PD2 8GB drive is fast, and has been very reliable so far (about two months). Just need more space...

100GB

I also have an i-Rocks 1.8" external 100GB drive. It is very fast but was expensive (about $240). It is USB powered and is very small.

Transcend JF150 512MB

Transcend JF150 512MB (498MB) - Speed: 16488 KB/s read, 6485 KB/s write.

Kingston DataTraveler 2GB (1967MB) - Speed: 10569 KB/s read, 2466 KB/s write.

Even if it's almost 4 times bigger, Kingston's USB drive is cheaper, but it's also much slower and runs hotter then the Transcend JF150. I got what I paid for...

Kingston DataTraveler II+ Migo Edition

Pros
- fast
- 5 Years of warranty
- additional software

Cons
- password protection: re-partitioning is possible without known password and data recovery should be easy
- electronics tend to shift around within the stick's case a bit

will post read/write speed after some tests, but should come close to official values of aboout 19 MB/s read and 13 MB/s write speed

My one is a 128 Megabyte M-Sys Biggrin
25 megabytes encrypted. 37 Megabytes Portable Apps.
That sums up to 65 megabytes useful space

*feeling l33t*

I was given an SD MP3 player (no onboard memory) with a 1GB card and a 512MB card. I then went and bought a £1 cheap and nasty SD card reader. Amazingly, it works perfectly and I have not had a single complaint from any computer about it. If the reader breaks (usually caused because someone slipped against the computer while the reader was in and breaks the USB connector), the card will be still perfectly intact and I can then buy another £1 reader instead of forking out another £10 for another drive and having to replace the data. The only bad thing is read/write speed. It's pants, but unless you're mounting an ISO from the drive, there's no real need for me to have fast read/write.
