Simple.

Just do it through the Command Prompt, it's the same as doing it to a local drive I'm quite sure, it will just schedule the formatting for time on reboot. First check that you wanna do that, in this same category, look for a post called Vista + NTFS or sumthing like that.

P.S. Were you reading the post on Making a PortableApps.com Toolbar? The 'toolbar' you probably saw was the RSS feeds in the bookmarks toolbar. Smile

On Window$ 2000/XP/Vi$ta is easy

Just go to "My Computer" folder, then, right click on the flash drive and choose format (that will also wipe out all data in the hard drive). Than choose all settings as you want (set up the partition type to be NTFS when formatted instead of FAT or FAT32).

Don't forget to see this post.

Hope to have helped.

Converting to NTFS

I tried to use the right-click format but the only available option was FAT32. I then used the command line utility and it worked great!

convert f: /fs:ntfs

NTFS will wear out a USB

NTFS will wear out a USB Flash Drive faster then would a FAT/FAT32 FS, Look into Journaling under NTFS, kinda like a logfile for the FS always updating the FS hense all the read/writes of the drive. I already went through 1 2GB usb flash drive that I had for a long time with NTFS.

Just my .02 cents

NTFS

The only reason I formatted my 8gb drive to NTFS was to get around the 4gb file size limit of FAT32. My virtualbox XP machine is about 5.8gb now...

Need first to optimize for performance

In order to be able to format the USB drive to NTFS, you'll need to first dig the device up in the device manager, right-click...Properties...Policies tab... , then change from "optimize for quick removal" to "optimize for performance". You'll then be able to format to NTFS from explorer. Only Caveat...You WILL need to then use the "Safely Remove Hardware" from the system tray.

Permissions Issue

This will, however, cause a permissions issue if you then try to use the drive on a Windows Vista machine (which is fussy with NTFS-formatted flash drives... among about 1,000 other things). You need to use the CONVERT /NoSecurity method on the drive.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
