ClamWin: Still doesn't work

I have been trying since version 0.88.5 and I can't get the program to work because "ClamWin Antivirus has encountered a problem and needs to close". I have tried it on 3 different computers and about 7 different hard drives and the result is still the same. As my previous post made on 1 March 2007 was never replied to I am hoping that by submitting a new post I might get some help.

Corruption?

It's verified to work on 98 through Vista without issue (I've personally tested it). And it's been downloaded well over a million times... so it's something wrong with your setup.

Which OS are you running on? Where are you downloading it from? Does the installer work correctly? Have you tried installing it to your local hard drive and running it from there? Are you using an oddball long path or installing to the recommended X:\PortableApps? Etc...

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Still doesn't work

I am running it on Windows XP Home SP2 (updates current) in all instances. Yes, installer works correctly. Yes, I have tried installing it to my local hard drive - several in fact: "I have tried it on 3 different computers and about 7 different hard drives." I have now also tried it on a brand new PC straight out of the box and same result. So in total, 4 PC local hard drives and various partition drives, and 4 USB drives.

This what I do: Portable Apps Menu is installed. I download ClamWin_Portable.paf.exe to the hard drive I want to install it on and run it. I install to default path (eg. X:\PortableApps\ClamWinPortable). I run the Portable Apps Menu, start ClamWin Portable and download updated definitions. After update is complete I select the drive I wish to scan and click Scan. That's as far as I get because "ClamWin Antivirus has encountered a problem and needs to close".

I am not using an oddball long path. I have used and not used the recommended path for installation. I have used and not used Portable Apps Menu to launch it.

I am downloading a new copy ClamWin_Portable.paf.exe every time (from the Portable Apps website) so it's not a corrupt file and is always the most up-to-date.

Yes, I know and appreciate that "it's been downloaded well over a million times". That's why I don't understand what's going wrong. I am very computer literate and I can't see that I am doing anything incorrectly. Any thoughts at all would greatly help.

Language? Comspec?

What language is the OS set to? Is your comspec set correctly (the launcher does attempt to fix this)? Anything else that you can think of that these PCs may have in common?
